Part 6: I Have it!!

It has finally arrived:

Let's recap the entire effort:

On November 26th, 2011, I began this series of blog posts: How to Buy a Supressor

Start to finish, it details on everything I have had do to buy a new suppressor for my Glock 21.

I did a lot of prep work up front. I researched and purchased a factory Glock threaded barrel. I researched various types of suppressors. I found the one I wanted and then a gun store that sold them.

  1. November 26th, 2011 I said, "I'll take it."
  2. I filled out a simple ATF Form 4 and provided my Drivers License.
  3. Five minutes later they had printed off, and signed, three copies for me to sign. They included them in a packet with instructions and fingerprint cards.
  4. I paid for the suppressor. Just the suppressor.
  5. They boxed it up, labeled it and put it in their safe.
  6. The next day I obtained two passport photos at CVS.
  7. Obtained two finger print cards.
  8. Submitted the forms for signature by the County Sheriff.
  9. December 15th I received the signed forms from the County Sheriff
  10. Same day I sent in all the forms with a check for $200 to the ATF.
  11. Wait... Wait... Wait... Wait...
  12. June 13th, 2012 I got the call from the Gun Store that the papers were in.
  13. Drove in, filled out the standard instant check forms.
  14. It is now mine!!
I am sure my whiny post on Monday is what did the trick!

--Now I have got to take it to the range!

Part 5: Still Waiting

On November 26th, 2011, I began a new series of blog posts: How to Buy a Supressor

I have gone into detail on everything I have had do to buy a new suppressor for my Glock 21.

I did a lot of prep work up front. I researched and purchased a factory Glock threaded barrel. I researched various types of suppressors. I found the one I wanted and then a gun store that sold them. The gun shop where I bought it does a lot of Class III business. Here is what I have done already:

  1. I filled out a simple ATF Form 4 and provided my Drivers License.
  2. Five minutes later they had printed off, and signed, three copies for me to sign. They included them in a packet with instructions and fingerprint cards.
  3. I paid for the suppressor. Just the suppressor.
  4. They boxed it up, labeled it and put it in their safe.
  5. Obtained two passport photos.
  6. Obtained two finger print cards.
  7. Submitted the forms for signature by the County Sheriff.
  8. Sent in all the forms with a check for $200.
  9. Wait...
So by now it's been over six months. I was actually hoping I would have it in hand by mid May.

--I told myself I was not going to buy the next suppressor until I had this one in hand!

Part 4: The Waiting

Four months ago today, I began a new series of blog posts: How to Buy a Supressor

I have gone into detail on everything I have had do to buy a new suppressor for my Glock 21.

  4. They boxed it up, labeled it and put it in the safe.
  5. Obtained two passport photos.
  6. Obtained two finger print cards.
  7. Submitted the forms for signature by the County Sheriff.
  8. Sent in all the forms with a check for $200.
  9. Wait...
All of it was mailed in December 15. I am hoping to have it in hand by BAG day on April 15th.

--That was it for today. Next up: Two passport photos.

Sudden Death

My brothers service was yesterday and the dust is beginning to settle.

This whole thing has me thinking about prepping for my own unexpected demise. Every now and then I look at the worse case scenario and prepare for it. As far as guns are concerned, if I were to die expectantly, The only guns that present a problem are my Class III items. My heirs are not allowed to posses them. In fact they would be required to surrender to the County Sheriff as soon as possible.

To mitigate that, I need to set up a Living Trust for the Class III items.

I have the name of a local attorney that specializes in Living Trusts. Once one is set up my wife and children will be able to possess my Class III firearms without violating the law or having to pay another transfer fee. I will document that process as I kick it off in the future.

--My brother didn't have any NFA controlled items. He did have guns though.

PART 3: How to Buy a Suppressor

My GEMTech Waits Patiently
I got home from work last night to find my ATF Form 4 paperwork package returned in the mail.

The County Sheriff has added his signature to mine, the Class III dealer and dated both copies. The next step is to put the following items together in a package:
  • Two copies of the ATF Form 4 with pics and signatures.
  • Certification of Citizenship Compliance U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B)
  • Two printed signed and certified fingerprint cards.
  • A check for $200
All of this I will scan as a file copy before it gets mailed.  The process states that payment should be a personal check or money order. Mail it to:

        BATFE
        P.O. Box 530298
        Atlanta, GA 30353-0298

--Took me about 5 minutes and now I wait again. Estimated wait is four months.

Part 2: How to Buy a Suppressor

In Part 1 I forgot to mention to how important it is to know the pitch and direction of the threads in your threaded barrel.

The Glock 21 factory barrel I purchased is described as M16x1LH. Some suppressors come threaded like this from the factory. Some require adapters. Some have throats that can be swapped out.

This is notable because it can add cost to an already expensive accessory.

Is this episode of tracking the process here is what I did next:
  1. I went to CVS and obtained two passport photos. It took five minutes and cost $9.95.
  2. These photos I attached to the ATF Form 4 in the required spot. I filled out the form. It took about five minutes.
  3. Next I went down to the County Courthouse and got my fingerprint cards done. $10 and it took 35 minutes because there was three people in line in front of me.
  4. I then dropped off the package for the Sheriff to run a local background check and sign off. No fee.
The clerk at the counter was very polite and professional. She reviewed the items to ensure I had signed everywhere I needed to and included everything required. She said that I will get it returned in about two weeks with the Sheriffs signatures.

--Next up: Write a check for $200 and mail it to the ATF!

  2. Five minutes later they had printed off, and signed, three copies for me to sign. They included them in a packet with instructions and fingerprint cards.
