“How can you protect yourself by carrying a sword if you don’t know how to use it?’
Not me, sir. Other people. They see the sword and don’t attack me,’ said Maladict patiently.
Yes, but if they did, lad, you wouldn’t be any good with it,’ said the sergeant.
No, sir. I’d probably settle for just ripping their heads off, sir. That’s what I mean by protection, sir. Theirs, not mine. And I’d get hell from the League if I did that, sir.”
― Terry Pratchett, Monstrous Regiment
“Beautiful girls should know how to defend themselves against the advances of gentlemen.”

“Most gun control arguments miss the point. If all control boils fundamentally to force, how can one resist aggression without equal force? How can a truly “free” state exist if the individual citizen is enslaved to the forceful will of individual or organized aggressors? It cannot.”

I still want this knife
Inside the magazine in the handle is:
- compartment door is a diamond hone
- a Leatherman Micro
- a magnesium and flint fire starter
- a needle for sewing
- a length of synthetic sinew for snares, fishing, sewing, a bow string etc.
- fish hooks
- it has capacity for a .45 round
- and a flashlight is on the lanyard.
Mark Knapp has more pics here.

WANT: Cold Steel Trench-Hawk
I have been thinking about getting a Cold Steel Trench-Hawk to toss in the trunk of my car and forget about it.
I would wrap the handle top to bottom with paracord and then toss it on the bottom of the trunk of my car and forget about it.
The price is only $32 and I would not worry about getting it dirty or scratching it or using it for dirty jobs.

Head sets
A friendly reader emailed me this image because she knows how much I Love SBRs.
It got me thinking about communications gear including head sets.
I have several FRS radios. Maybe I should get head sets for them.
Any one have personal experience?

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”

“Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming it's not an individual right or that it's too much of a public safety hazard, don't see the danger in the big picture. They're courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the Constitution they don't like.”

My New Favorite Holster
For years I have been using a compact 1911 for my daily carry firearm.
I have moved to my Glock 17 recently because of the Galco Kingtuk IWB Holster.
This holster is comfy and secure and is priced well at $55 from Amazon.
I won't start a debate between the 1911 and the Glock because I like both. I will say I shoot the Glock 17 better because the sights are better.
--Carry your gun in a comfy holster. Otherwise you won't carry it.

Mounted Shooting
I saw this photo of Sarah Palin on Facebook today. It shows her shooting while on horseback.
We see people shooting while mounted all the time in the movies and on TV. We take it for granted.
What you may not know is that it is a huge effort to teach a horse not to totally freak out and lose it's shit when a gun goes off.
I knew a guy long ago that was a horse trainer for mounted police. He had a paddock at the end of an airport runway. There was also a propane device that went off randomly like a cannon.
The older horses helped teach the new horses.
It took a while until the horses got use to the noise. They would eventually ride them in the noise, then finally fire a gun without getting thrown.
--Eventually they don't even flinch.

Posting Habits
This week my normal posting habits are completely disrupted.
I usually get up make coffee and do my morning post right before I go to work. Today however, I had to go into the office early. It will be like that every day this week. I'm just trying to get ready have everything organized before I go on vacation.
Today's post is brought to you by the iPhone. It's kind of cool that I can just say these things out loud and they magically appear on the screen.
It's way faster than I can type and it's certainly a way better speller than I am!
Okay. i'll work something up for tomorrow, tonight, after I get home from work.

Quotes of the Week
There once was a man name Barack,
Whose re-election came as a shock.
He raised the taxes I pay,
And then turned marriage gay.
And now he's coming after your glock.
–Stephen Colbert
Guns made us free and have kept us free, one side says; the other side rejects guns as instruments of domination, lawlessness, and terrorism. The conflict rages on because both sides are right.
--Jan Dizard
As long as there are guns, the individual that wants a gun for a crime is going to have one and going to get it. The only person who’s going to be penalized and have difficulty is the law-abiding citizen, who then cannot have [it] if he wants protection -- the protection of a weapon in his home.

A gun is like breath to a drowning man—it has to be drawn in haste.

Riot Readiness
I have heard gun grabbers say over and over again, "Why do you need an AR15?"
I am afraid that they may have their question answered.
Contingency "Protests" are already being organized in Florida in case Zimmerman is acquitted. Protests that will likely become riots.
I recommend you have your mags loaded, your pantries full, batteries charged, gas tank full in your car and maybe even get a few spare fire extinguishers.
The defense is expected to rest today. The Jury of six women could potentially come back with a verdict today. It could be a bad weekend in Florida.
I love how the people on Twitter act as if they are forensics and legal experts. They state things as facts. Facts that prove laws were broken that don't exist.
I hope I am completely wrong on this, a worry wart. I hope people stay calm. I hope all the threats and inciting of riots is easy bluster from the safety of peoples keyboards. I hope the threats to burn his house down are only threats. (the prosecution showed his home address on TV)
I think he will be acquitted. I believe if he is found guilty it will only be because he is being thrown under the bus.

Justice Department Facilitated anti-Zimmerman Protests
Yes. Yet another Scandal for the Holder camp. Yet another failure of the main stream media to cover it.
This is from The Daily Caller.
"A division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) was deployed to Sanford, Florida in 2012 to provide assistance for anti-George Zimmerman protests, including a rally headlined by activist Al Sharpton, according to newly released documents."
"The Community Relations Service (CRS), a unit of DOJ, reported expenses related to its deployment in Sanford to help manage protests between March and April 2012, according to documents obtained by the watchdog group Judicial Watch."

"So maybe you are not leading millions of people to the promised land. However, with this vest combo you would sure look cool doing it. The William Joseph® Exodus is the best way possible to combine the storage and load carrying capabilities of a back pack with the organization possibilities of a vest. And when one or the other is not needed you can play home physicist and split the two with the click of a few buckles. You can now be self contained, organized, and oh so comfortable."
This rig balances the load better. It also gives you easy access to the pouches in the front.
It's also adjustable for good fit.
--At $165 I would have to try one on first though.

Slings Redux
For many years I have used the same kind of slings on all my rifles.
Your standard two point sling. Mounted in the front and back. Great for a
shoulder carry.
I have come to love single point slings
Single-Point Slings
Not limited to use only with ARs, single-point slings are one of the most commonly used types of slings in Law Enforcement and Military environments.
They usually contain some kind of elastic material so that you can move your slung weapon freely and comfortably without having to make any adjustments to the sling itself. The weapon can bounce around if not secured.
Many rifles need mods to install a loop to attach the sling in the right spot.
Two-Point Slings
Two-point slings are most common among hunters that just need a plain sling to carry their AR or other hunting rifle around. This type of sling can also be used as a tactical sling as well. This config is one of the oldest style of slings. I have a ton if these slings. Most of my rifles have them. Several have handy quick detach couplers, Some have slip style adjustments. Some are just plain belt style. I have many. When hunting in particular a sling is a must have when you have to walk a good distance. Those bull barrels get damn heavy!!
Three-Point Slings
There are even three point slings. They seem too complicated to me. I like the Keep It Simple Systems (KISS).
Sling Mounts
If you plan on using a single-point sling on your AR-15, you’ll need the appropriate mount if your rifle does not already have one. Here is a Yankee Hill Ambidextrous Carbine Sling Mount, pictured to the right.
A good sling, a good holster, a good pair of boots and a good carrier for your spare mags.

Tried to Hit NRA Range
I knew I was in trouble based on how full the lot was. When I got inside it was packed. When I got to the waiting list to add my name I asked the woman behind the counter how long the wait was going to be.
She said it was a 2 or 3 hour wait. Wow. I thought the holiday weekend would have people at their grills or our buying fireworks.
I thought about waiting as I wandered though the waiting area. No seats on the nice leather sofas. No spaces on the benches. Even the class room was almost full. I bagged it. My DVDs need sorting.
It was 50/50 men and women. Higher ratio than usual. I shouldn't be surprised. It's Virginia.

Quotes of the Week
Don't think of it as `gun control', think of it as `victim disarmament'. If we make enough laws, we can all be criminals. The possession of arms by the people is the ultimate warrant that government governs only with the consent of the governed.
-- Jeff Snyder
As the Founding Fathers knew well, a government that does not trust its honest, law-abiding, taxpaying citizens with the means of self-defense is not itself worthy of trust. Laws disarming honest citizens proclaim that the government is the master, not the servant, of the people.
-- Jeff Snyder
When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state".
-- Claire Wolfe
Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.
-- James Madison
"One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms."
-- Constitutional scholar and Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, 1840
"Taking my gun away because I might shoot someone is like cutting my tongue out because I might yell `Fire!' in a crowded theater."

Zimmerman Trial: Halfway
So the prosecution has rested in the Trial of George Zimmerman for Second Degree Murder.
The Miller Opinion:
This should never have come to trial. They NOT prove Murder 2 beyond a reasonable doubt. not even close.
More than half of the states own witnesses testified information that supported Zimmerman's story.
Everyone is saying he is guilty because he should have stayed in the car. Should have stopped following after the 911 dispatcher asked him to stop.
None of that matters because Trayvon attacked him.
The only thing that matters is the question: Was Zimmerman in fear of great bodily harm when he killed Martin.
These photos showing injuries that Trayvon Martin inflicted are enough for reasonable doubt. He was the one screaming for help. His mother and uncle recognized his voice on the 911 tape. Martin's Mother WANTED it to be Trayvon calling for help. You could see it in her face that she knew it was wishful thinking.
The trials prosecution witnesses were ridiculous. The Medical Examiner looked like it was his first time on the stand. Girl admitting to lying again and again, that could not even read the letter she supposedly wrote to Trayvons mom.
All the most credible witnesses so far supported Zimmerman.
Twitter is rampant with calls to riot if he is acquitted. There was even a Riot For Trayvon Facebook page up for a few days until FB took it down. I have even seen threats against the Judges kids if he is acquitted.
I believe Zimmerman is not guilty of Murder in the 2nd.
I believe there is LOTS of reasonable doubt.
I believe he was only charged at all for political reasons.
I believe the prosecution knew they could not prove Murder 2 all along.
I believe this whole trial is not for the jury, it's for the public.
I believe President Obama is partly to blame for this waste of a trial and any deaths that occur from riots.
I believe Zimmerman will be acquitted.
I believe Zimmerman's life will be ruined anyway.
I believe all hell is going to break loose.

I Love VA
July 1, the following new gun laws took effect in the Old Dominion:
Senate Bill 1335, patroned by state Senator Mark D. Obenshain (R-26), safeguards the confidentiality of all concealed handgun permit (CHP) holders in Virginia.
Senate Bill 1363, patroned by state Senator Jill H. Vogel (R-27), and House Bill 2317, patroned by Delegate Rich Anderson (R-51), are companion bills that provide that residency for members of the Armed Forces shall include both the member’s permanent duty post and the nearby state in which the military personnel resides for the purposes of firearms purchases.
Senate Bill 1378, patroned by state Senator Thomas A. Garrett (R-22), increases penalties for individuals who knowingly assist prohibited persons in illegally obtaining firearms. An amendment submitted by Governor McDonnell, at the NRA's request, improves this law by adding protections for law-abiding citizens by exempting purchases of a firearm by a person for the lawful use, possession or transport by his child, grandchild, or individual for whom he is the legal guardian if such child, grandchild, or individual is ineligible, solely because of his age, to purchase a firearm.
House Bill 1582, patroned by Delegate Mark L. Cole (R-88), permits armed security officers licensed by the Department of Criminal Justice Services to carry firearms onto private or religious school property if the officer is hired by the private or religious school to provide protection to students and employees. This law also prohibits the Board of Social Services from adopting any regulations that would prevent a child day center from hiring an armed security officer.
House Bill 1833, patroned by Delegate L. Scott Lingamfelter (R-31), creates separate sections to address the general criminal prohibition against carrying concealed firearms; the requirements for applying for a concealed handgun permit; the process the circuit court follows in reviewing, issuing, and denying permits; the appeals process procedures for nonresidents to obtain permits; the renewal process disqualifications; and other procedural issues.

I'm Back from Camping
I got back last night from camping. Spent four nights at Green Lakes State Park just outside of Syracuse NY.
The park is really beautiful. The lake is very clean and has a great family beach.
What it doesn't have is security, safety or sanity. Draconian Gun Laws in NY left me disarmed my entire stay. Most of my shotguns even have to high capacity tub mags.
Talking with my college pals They thought I could have brought a single shot 20ga if it had a trigger lock and separate ammo storage. Two of my buddies have CCPs in NYS. They both carry .357 revolvers. It is also very difficult to get an out of state CCP for New York.
--I will be doing more camping in VA and PA.
