Bad Prepper Ideas That Will Get You Killed

I'm a hunter. I have been for decades. I'm pretty good at it as well. I would never consider that as my only plan. Only a supplement.

I constantly hear people say, "If the Shit Hits The Fan I am going yo head for the woods with my rifle and live off the land!"

This usually comes from a person that is out of shape, has never hunted before, and does not even camp.

I saw this great post that is a Reality Check.

12 Bad Prepper Strategies That Could Get You Killed

I think stockpiling guns and ammo is a good idea. But you have to also think about water, food, sanitation, medicine, supplies, gear and many other things. Don't plan on being a refugee as your whole strategy, please. Don't plan on being an asshole, stealing other people stuff. Both will get you killed.

--This article shines a light on several, often repeated, bad ideas.

PMAGs

I scored some more 40 round PMAGs for a good price.

Availability that was null, not so long ago, is now back to adequate levels.

What do you think will cause the next drought in the market? I am sure there will be one. Will it be the run up to the next election? Will it be caused by the election results? Will it be caused by another shooter going postal? Will it be caused by the Killer Robot Uprising? Maybe even the pending Zombie Apocalypse?

Anyway, the time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining. And it's shining very, very bright in Virginia right now.

--Buy your guns now. Buy Mags, ammo, but leave the .22LR for me!  Please!

Fire Starting

Over the years I have become a student of several survival skills. One of these is building a fire without matches. I have managed to do this many ways using the following:
  • Flint and steel
  • Magnifying glass
  • A Flashlight
  • Steel wool and car battery
  • Bow and dowel
  • Car Headlight
  • Bic, Zippo, etc
This handy dandy Flint and Steel Knife is only $5.45 from Amazon. Perfect for tossing in the trunk of your car, Bug Out Bag or glove box.

--Know any other ways I should try to make fire? I have already tried the Coke can and Chocolate method to no avail.

Gun Shot "Blow Out Kit"

Gun Shot Blow Out Kit
I have been working on my standard range bag contents. It just happened that I saw this video this week and have decided I need to have a gun shot "Blow Out Kit" in my range bag. This guy shot himself in the leg by accident and kept his head. He called 911 and had the bleeding stopped before the EMTs arrived.

To date, I have been carrying a first aid kit in my bag and a bigger one in my truck, but these are not emergency trauma kits specifically designed for gun shot wounds.

Amazon has a lot of Emergency Kits of various kinds, sizes and focus.

I am leaning toward a dedicated gun shot trauma blow out kit. Here are me requirements:
  • Can be accessed and utilized with one hand
  • Self contained in an easy open pouch
  • Fits in a thigh pocket
  • One handed Tourniquets
  • Quickclot bandages (trauma pads)
  • Clotting powder
  • Variety of gauze rolls and pads
  • Surgical shears
  • Scalpels, forceps, and other instruments
  • Surgical gloves
  • Medical tapes
There are several prefab kits available on the Internet. I think I may just buy a good Molle pouch put together a kit with the help of an EMT I know.

Shit happens. And fast. Be prepared. It may save you or someone near you.

--It's better to have one and not need one than to need one and not have one.

Primitive Weapons

I have recently taken up primitive archery again. By that I mean long bows. Not compound bows. I already have a compound bow and a compound crossbow.

A friend of mine is a big time SCA Archer. The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism. Basically they are a bunch of beer drinkers with a history problem.

It's been like 15 or 20 years since I have done any real archery. I did OK. I shot about 200 arrows and didn't miss the target. I was using a 30 pound long bow. Some folks had crossbows too. Big fun.

I will be buying a decent bow this summer. Maybe even do some bow hunting this fall.

I want this knife!

I saw this at first over at The Black Sunday Society and immediately put it on my Christmas list.

Inside the magazine in the handle is:
  • compartment door is a diamond hone
  • a Leatherman Micro
  • a magnesium and flint fire starter
  • a needle for sewing
  • a length of synthetic sinew for snares, fishing, sewing, a bow string etc.
  • fish hooks
  • it has capacity for a .45 round
  • and a flashlight is on the lanyard.
Or just keep a spare mag in there for you 1911!

--I hope it is a quality knife. Not a cheesy Rambo style Survival Knife. I have enough of those!

I need some land, dammit.

My wife and I are planning to buy some land in the next couple years. I want an existing cabin so we can begin to use it right away. But I also want to create a guest house or hidden retreat for us in a secluded spot there somewhere.

A nice cozy place full of books, rice, beans and Spam where we can quietly sit out the Killer Robot Uprising.

The $50 & Up Underground House Book

This book has the right idea.

Needs the right spot. It looks like it would be fun to create and conceal. Add a bit of solar power and we have a winner!

--Can be made so it's not only concealed but nicely bullet resistant!
