I started this blog 14 years ago in a different world.
If you would have told me then how nuts the world be now, I would have laughed in your face.
It was President George W Bush then. Sheesh.
All I can say is that I'm going camping.
My next purchase
I finally got my hand on the new Ruger 9mm carbine. It's the takedown version of the system that is extra nice for this camp carbine. It also takes Glock 9mm mags and has a threaded barrel compatible with the 9mm suppressor I already own.
Rumor has it an adjustable/folding stock will be available soon.
I will probably add a fixed 4x scope to finish it off.

Boats and Guns
The topic of Boat Guns came up and is why if he buys the boat he intends to register and moor to boat in Virginia in stead of Maryland.
But what kind of gun would be good on a boat? For defense? Survival? For fun?
I think he will need a handgun like a stainless S&W 629, a shotgun like a stainless Mossberg 500 Mariner, and a rifle. Still the standard 3 gun system.
What features are good to have in a boat gun? What about accessories?
The first thing that comes to mind is stainless steel guns. Much easier to care for. Less likely to corrode. Also a bit more expensive. I have seen stainless handguns of all kinds as will as shotguns. But not to many all stainless AR15s or AR10s. (AR10 is way better for pirates)
I have seen several water tight containers for firearms. Combined with a moisture collection packet or even a cloth bag of rice, guns can stay dry. I have seen nice designs for PVC pipe, waterproof, floating containers.
Oh, I'd also toss in a Henry Arms AR-7 that stows in it's own waterproof stock! The whole think floats.

Gone Camping
I always take guns when I go camping even if we are not going to be shooting.
I will be taking my suppressed Glock 21 and my AR-15 SBR. But no redheads, dammit!

Going Camping!
We are camper camping this weekend in a state park in southern Virginia.
In VA we are allowed to carry firearms, concealed or openly, in state parks. Yet another reason to love VA.
This will also be the shakedown cruise for our new camper.
We made one tactical error. You see we bought this camper because it fits, barely, into my garage. We have those dumb-ass HOA rules that say you cannot park RVs in your own driveway.
Anyway the error was, we forgot the the driveway was scheduled to be resealed yesterday.
--Lets hope it's dry enough to get the camper out!

--If I had one I would be forced to go out and buy a 4WD truck!!
I'm Back from Camping
I got back last night from camping. Spent four nights at Green Lakes State Park just outside of Syracuse NY.
The park is really beautiful. The lake is very clean and has a great family beach.
What it doesn't have is security, safety or sanity. Draconian Gun Laws in NY left me disarmed my entire stay. Most of my shotguns even have to high capacity tub mags.
Talking with my college pals They thought I could have brought a single shot 20ga if it had a trigger lock and separate ammo storage. Two of my buddies have CCPs in NYS. They both carry .357 revolvers. It is also very difficult to get an out of state CCP for New York.
--I will be doing more camping in VA and PA.

I confess that the blog posts for the last two weeks were scheduled in advance via the magic of mystical blogger tools.
I spent most of the time in my favorite hammock reading SciFi books and napping.
The rest of the time was spent eating a variety of taste meats, drinking beers and bourbon around a campfire, or enjoying early morning coffee and conversations.
The only thing even remotely gun content related is that I got to see Breda Fallacy! She even cooked the best camp meal EVER!

The Eat'N Tool
I started packing stuff and everywhere I look I seem to have seeded all my BOBs with the handy Eat'N Tool.
These things are damn handy it you are packin light! It has a fork, spoon, beer opener, wrenches, and screw driver.
I have one in my range bag because it's perfect for adjusting a couple of my scopes!

Camping
I will take some quiet ones. a .22 handgun and rifle with suppressors. Plus my Glock.
I might also take my brothers air rifle and plink some cans. I will take pics.
--There will also be cigars and bacon!!
I need some land, dammit.
A nice cozy place full of books, rice, beans and Spam where we can quietly sit out the Killer Robot Uprising.

This book has the right idea.
Needs the right spot. It looks like it would be fun to create and conceal. Add a bit of solar power and we have a winner!
--Can be made so it's not only concealed but nicely bullet resistant!

| Some of the best times of my life have happened around a campfire, |
Back when I was single I would go camping often when the weather was good. Well, when the weather was bad too, actually.
I had a deal with a friends parents who had a cabin in the mountains. They would let me camp there when ever I wanted if I would do maintenance and mow the grass when I went. They had a cinder block cabin that was never really finished. It didn't have electricity but it had a fireplace and a flush toilet. I never slept in the cabin unless the weather was really bad because there were sooo many mice in residence I could not sleep because of their all night parties.
It also had a 24x24 foot deck. I loved it. I put my 10x10 dome tent up on it. High, dry, no mice and as long as it wasn't torrential rain it was great. It was in the middle of 60 acres, next to the National forest. The nearest neighbor was about a mile away. Great hunting and shooting spots everywhere.
Anyway, I was camping there one weekend with some buddies. Some of the maintenance we were doing involved spray paint. We always did the work first thing on Friday right after arriving and then relaxed. Usually only an hour or two of work. Then it was time for the steaks, Spam, beers, camp fires, cigars, lies and relaxation.
Sundays were big bacon and eggs breakfasts followed by packing up. On this specific "pack up" my brother was policing up trash and he picked up a spent spray paint can we had used for the Fridays maintenance that had, to our amazement, escaped destruction.
With barely a thought, he looked at me, raised an eyebrow, and said, "bet you can't hit this in one shot with the Mossberg from the hip." I was ready to try in 5 seconds. Little did I know at the time, that a spay can that was out of propellant didn't mean all the paint was gone...
He tossed the can, my aim was true.
The can turned into a cloud of silver paint that slowly drifted back toward us as we ran. My truck, however, was unable to flee...
--My Mossberg 500 still has a little silver paint on the pistol grip. Makes me smile every time I see it.
Camping, Guns and Chasing Cans
I love camping.
For me, guns and camping have always gone together. Even if I don't go shooting while I am camping, I usually take some firearms. When I was a kid we camped a lot with the family. My dad always carried. It was very formative for me.
For simple personal security I usually have my Glock 21. I also have a 16 inch Mossberg 500 that fits neatly in my backpack as well as an Armalite AR-7.
Other than that I have found that suppressed guns are great for camping trips. Especially my .22LR handgun and rifle. This pic is my Ruger 10/22 with integral suppressor. I just got a new scope for it. It's a 3x to 9x zoom. Perfect for this rifle.
It's fun to chase cans. You can carry a huge pile of ammo easily and you don't have to even schlep hearing protection!
--And don't forget a good sling!
