My next purchase

I finally got my hand on the new Ruger 9mm carbine.  It's the takedown  version of the system that is extra nice for this camp carbine. It also takes Glock 9mm mags and has a threaded barrel compatible with the 9mm suppressor I already own.

Rumor has it an adjustable/folding stock will be available soon.

I will probably add a fixed 4x scope to finish it off.

Roni Brass Catcher

At the NRA Convention I wandered by the RONI booth.

As previously stated, I am a big Roni fan. At the show display they were showing off various accessories for the Roni.

The one that would be really handy at time is the brass catcher.

There turns out to be several variations available.

The suppressed Roni is great for shooting at my sisters farm. It doesn't scare the horses. Picking up all the brass from the grass is a total pain in the ass.

This inexpensive accessory solves that!

--It reminds me of the bagger on my lawn mower.

Want: KRISS Vector

I have had this gun on my want list for a long time. Sounds like they have worked most of the bugs out!

--I like this guys range too!

KRISS

I really like pistol caliber carbines.

In recent years I have spent a lit of cash on them. Most notably, these three:
  • Beretta Cx4 .40
  • JR Carbine .45
  • Roni Glock 21 .45
A friend emailed me this photo of the KRISS Carbine in action. He just shot one this weekend and stated that If I had tried one first I may have stopped there...

Sigh.

--I still want one.

WANT: TNW 9mm Carbine

Happy Friday the 13th!!

I am lovin pistol caliber carbines these days. I got the JR Carbine which is still suffering from constant jamming, still. I have the Roni conversion kit that is sooo sweet. And this weekend I got to handle a TNW Carbine. The one I was looking at was 9mm and took Glock magazines. I have a ton of mags for my Glock 17 already, including three 33 round Glock factory mags!

TNW Carbine

--The street price I saw at Clark Brothers was $699. Might have to get one!

SBR Paper Work Has Arrived

The SBR paperwork finally came in for my Glock 21 Roni project!

It will be a super fun rig but in the end will be pretty damn expensive. Here is the list with basic costs:
    • $550 - Glock 21 .45ACP
    • $115 - Factory Threaded Barrel
    • $400 - RONI Carbine Kit
    • $1050 - AAC Suppressor
    • $50 - Magpul sights
    • $90 - Tactical Light
    • $100  - Three 27 Round Mags
    • $35 - Single Point Sling
    • $200 - Class III Tax for Suppressor
    • $200 - Class III Tax for Short Barrel Rifle
    Total: $ 2790

This results in a really compact, light, reliable, powerful and quiet, carbine. Great for the pending Zombie Apocalypse! But is it worth all the money?

--I will probably add a compact EOTech adding another $400.

Want: Iver Johnson M1 Carbine Pistol

Once again with the short firearms! What's up with that?

This beauty is an Iver Johnson M1 Carbine Pistol in .30 cal. I think it is real pretty and would be a lot of fun to shoot. It is classified as a pistol so there is no need to pay for the SBR tax stamp.

    Iver Johnson M1 Carbine Pistol

--The biggest problem is finding one!

    Government Shutdown

    The Fed shutdown yesterday.

I wonder how many days this will delay my ATF SBR forms for my Suppressed Glock 21 Roni rig?

The last shutdown was during the Clinton administration and lasted 21 days!

The setup pictured on the right is basically the way I plan to configure my Roni carbine once I get the paperwork back! I think my suppressor will probably stick out a few inches farther. I already have the EOTech for this rig waiting in the box in the safe.

This rig will be reliable and quiet. It should be a lot of fun to shoot.

--I have to admit that by the time I am finished configuring it, I will have spent a lot of money on this rig. That will make a good future post.

    New Double Glock Conversion

Here is an interesting concept that uses a pair of glocks. From NEDG.

--Holds a lot of ammo and you can still shoot as you are reloading!

    Sub-Tec AR .45ACP Carbine

Saw this on Facebook yesterday! Can't wait to see the price. Now that I mention it I can't wait to see anything in the gun stores. Anything!

--I really need to get some work done on my JR Carbine.

    Failure to feed.

I am trying to sort out a feed jam on the JR Carbine. I had 2 of these failures in 300 rounds this weekend.

As far as I can tell the bolt is not sliding back all the way to be able to pick up the back lip of the cartridge. In the large version of the image you can see where the bolt started trying to pick up the round.

It does it with force. enough to damage the bullet and the casing. It will happen with or without the suppressor and all the mags are Glock factory mags.

Another thing that may or may not be related is that it is rattling all the nut loose. Had to pause a couple times to tighten up everything.

--I need this thing to be an Easy Button.

    Gunsmithin: Part 2

I found a Class III gunsmith near me.

I can now see why it's better to actually go to a smith that has a ton of experience with suppressors.

The Gemtech suppressor I have includes an internal spring and piston system. A different unit is available for a carbine to optimize the sound suppression.

I got a tour of his shop. It's huge. It has a bunch of huge specialty lathes, presses and CNC machines. I swear, if you have the money, they could make you anything.

Anyway, he gave me a rough estimate of the price, with parts. He'll call with an exact estimate and schedule.

--Should be a quick turn around. I will keep you updated.

    JRC Grips

TacStar AR-15 Tactical Front and Rear Grip Set Black
I received a question about the new grips I put on the JR Carbine. I really like the feel of them. The non-slip rubber finish give a really secure hold. Back and front.

I also like the price! The set was only $40.  I got these here at www.cheaperthandirt.com.

The JR Carbine accepts standard AR-15 furniture so the selection options are great. I also like that the front grip folds down neatly.

The pics below show the before and after.

--Next up I need another EOTech!

    JRC Project Update

I seem to be having multiple projects out on the bench, at the same time, this weekend.

My grips arrived on Friday. I love the rubber texture of the matching grip set. The pistol grip is far superior than the cheap plastic original one. You can see the original one here.

The foregrip also functions in multiple different positions. It makes it very comfy in different settings. I put a Tactical Light/LASER unit on it but I am not all that happy with it.It will probably be removed/replaced in no time. I also ordered some Magpul flip up sights but only the back one has arrived so far.

Here's what left for the JRC Project:

    • EOTech Sight
    • An Excellent Sling
    • Thread the Barrel
--Plus a pile of more mags, maybe a hot green LASER, and an LED light.

    The JR Carbine

I purchased the JR Carbine at Nations Gun Show. The price was great: $549

I have now taken it to the range twice and ran a hundred rounds through it each time.

    JR Carbine - .45 ACP

    Here is the good stuff:
    • The price point is excellent at $549
    • It is easily, quickly, convertible to left hand eject
    • The bolt handle can be on the left or right
    • Controls are familiar and easy
    • The internals are simple, I like simple
    • The components exceed my expectations in quality
    • My cheap $30 DOT scope did well
    • I managed a free standing, 15 round, 10" group, at 50 yards, in 10 seconds
    • It's .45 ACP! I could deer hunt with this baby

    Here is the bad stuff:
    • It came with only one 10 round Glock mag
    • The single jam was using the 27 round mag
    • When empty, the bolt does not stay open.
    • It goes, "click" when empty. You have no sense it's empty
    • To clean it requires 3 different tools plus cleaning gear
      • 2 Alan wrenches
      • An AR wrench
    • You have to take the stock off in order to remove the bolt
    • The Alan nuts rattle loose easily
    • The bolt handle and lower Alan nuts are different sizes
    • No storage in the hallow pistol grip. (for Alan Wrenches)
Even with all the negatives so far I must say I am loving this carbine. It has a little less recoil than the Beretta  Cx4 .40 I have.  I am very disappointed in the after market 27 round mags I bought. I need to find quality huge mags. I worry about how fast all the nuts work loose. maybe because it was so well oiled before shipping. We shall see how that plays out. I will withhold final judgement until the 500 round break-in is past. I am going to need another case of .45ACP!

I have purchased a suppressor for my Glock 21. I plan on threading this barrel the same. Not only will they be able to share mags they will be able to share the suppressor. I am so addicted to adjustable stocks!

So far it's a big thumbs up for the JR Carbine.

What are my future plans for the JRC?
    • Flip-up Sights
    • An EOTech scope
    • A threaded barrel for my suppressor
    • A good sling
    • A quality hot green LASER
    • High capacity mags

--Need to find a gunsmith for the barrel threading!!

    My Next Gun

Everyone seems to be asking me off-line why I was selling the XD9. I am looking to finance my next purchase: The JR Carbine. I finally got to handle it and have decided I am going to get one as soon as I have the cash.  It is selling for $530 street!

The clerk at the gun store is the same guy that sold me the suppressor for my Glock and said it would only cost about $100 to get the barrel threaded. It could share the can!

    --This is gonna be fun!

    WANT: JR Carbine

At my local gun shop I finally got to handle a JR Carbine.

This guy has now officially  elbowed it's way to the top of my want list. Tricked out properly it will be a super Zombie Killer!!

The quality of the construction seems to be very good. That was what I was worried about the most for the price tag of $530.

The stock and pistol grip are standard AR and it has a good quadrail right out of the box. It comes with two standard Glock mags. With the flat to there is a lot of Magpul love can be added.

The one I handled was in 9mm. I was originally going to go with the .45 but this one has me thinking 9mm again. I already have three 33 round Glock 9mm mags.

    --Gotta save some more pennies!

    FNH USA

    FNH PS90
I was talking to a gun buddy at work and he told me he had the chance to shoot some firearms made by FNH. He has been looking for a new hand gun and really liked the FNP-45 and was very surprised to see it was stamped as being made in Fredricksberg VA.

Fredricksberg VA is only about 30 miles from where I live. I wonder if they would be interested in giving a group of gun bloggers a tour?

FNH is the maker of the PS90 carbine. I have had this guy on my list for a long time.

--Yet another reason to love Virginia.

    Cx4 Trigger

    Cx4 Storm .40
At the recent Blogshoot in West Virginia I was lucky enough to shoot a lot of various firearms.

I was paying particular attention to the trigger action on the various guns I was shooting.

OLD NFO has guns that have triggers that are soft and smooth as butter. The comparison to the trigger on my Cx4 was dramatic.

I never thought the trigger on the Cx4 was all that bad until that day. It felt absolutely sandy by comparison. I will be making a project out of smoothing out the trigger on this firearm.

--I still love it. It couldn't be that bad! I was ringing the gong at 250 yards, even with the sandy trigger.

    WANT: JRC 45

I just found the carbine that I have been looking for.  The JR Carbine 45ACP - For Glock Mags.

    JR Carbine .45 ACP

It has the features I have been looking for:
    • .45 ACP Carbine
    • Takes Glock 21 magazines including my 27 rounders
    • Price: $639 retail
    • Simple, reliable, straight blowback operation
    • Ambidextrous bolt - configurable for left or right-hand ejection
    • Lightweight 16-1/4" barrel
    • Free-floating quadrail forend
    • Picatinny rail machined into top of receiver
    • Telescoping 6-position collapsible M-4 style buttstock
    • Standard M-4 buffer tube, buttstock, and pistol grip
    • Utilizes standard M-4/AR-15 furniture and trigger components
    • Lightweight - approximately 6.5 lbs.
    • Overall length: buttstock extended 33-1/2", collapsed 30-1/4"
    • Made in the U.S.A. (no 922r problems)
It's also available in 9mm (Glock mags), .40cal (Glock mags) and .45 using 1911 mags. I hope I can find one to handle because I want it bad! I will also be able to use my suppressor from my Glock 21! Add an EOTech to this baby and the Zombies will be dropping!!

(Update: T-Bolt had a good discussion about it yesterday)

--This will be my next purchase.
