Want: Mossberg MVP Flex

I have been interested in the new class of rifles that are mag fed and compatible with regular AR15 mags. I already have a nice, bolt action, .308 as well as a nice bolt action .22lr, but nothing in between.

Here are the features I really like:

• It can use a standard 30 round mag. I already have a pile of them.
• It has an adjustable stock.
• Several stock options are available.
• The barrel is threaded and has a standard AR15 flash suppressor.
• It can use a standard AR15 suppressor.
• Simple and easy to use. Easy to clean.
• Picitinny top rail.

My greatest worry about this rig is the cost. Depending on the features you select it can be between $500 and $900 dollars. For the same money you could get a Remington 700 or any of many other excellent bolt action rigs.

--Even so. I really like the look and feel of it.

I love the idea of magazine fed 12 gauge shotguns.

I have a Saiga and I love that.

I saw this conversion kit for a Remington 870 that switched it from tube to magazine. They also have kits for Mossberg 500 series.

It accepts standard Saiga mags, even the big drum mags.

The cost for the kit is $499.

--Might be a fun project in the future. I have a lot of other things I need to spend $500 on though.

I have fired many short shotguns and this one looks like it would be a lot of fun.

I can't imagine the recoil would be too bad, but the blast ball of fire would probably be dramatic.

The biggest problem is I don't think this is real. This is a paint ball gun.

Does anyone know if this is made as an actual shotgun? In any guage?

-I would probably buy one. Short, Impractical, dangerous, powerful, and super fun.

Murder Rate in the US Reaches 100 Year Low

According to FBI Stats the US violent crime rate, including the murder rate, have reached a 100 year low.

I saw this article over at SLATE.COM and was very interested to read HERE that in DC it is down over 20% since the DC vs Heller decision allowed handgun ownership again.

Still Looking for One

Kel-Tec PMR-30

I have a couple Kel-Tec handguns already.

The PF-9 is a semi-automatic, locked breech pistol, chambered for the 9mm Luger cartridge. Worst trigger in my collection.

The P-3AT is a very compact, semi-automatic, locked breech pistol, chambered for the .380 Auto cartridge.

Now I have my eye on the PMR-30. The PMR-30 is a light weight, full size pistol chambered for the flat-shooting .22Magnum cartridge (.22WMR). The PMR-30 operates on a unique hybrid blowback/locked-breech system. This operation system allows for the use of a wide variety of ammunition as it seamlessly adjusts between locked breach and blowback operation, depending on the pressure of the cartridge. It uses a double stack magazine of a new design that holds 30 rounds and fits completely in the grip of the pistol.

I wonder where if .22mag is available. Shelves are pretty empty here.

Let me start off by stating that my daily carry firearm is a small frame 1911 .45ACP with slim grips. I carry it because it's a slim single stack. I saw this chart at pdb and thought it was awesome. head over there and read his post. I am book marking it.

Shoulder Holsters

I have a big pile of holsters.

I was in a rut carrying the same guns and using the same holsters. I confess my favorites have changed over the years. I will usually get a new gun followed closely by a new holster (or two) for it because I want to carry it.

The result is a drawer full of holsters.

In the Winter the shoulder holsters come out. Winter coats allow me to carry using ANY holster in my collection. Today while I was out and about I was wearing one of my cheaper shoulder rigs. I think I bought this one from CheaperThanDirt.com after seeing a friends at the range. I think it was only $30 but it works great with my Beretta Px4 and two mags.

I have an nice vertical Bianchi shoulder rig for my Smith &Wesson .44mag. It's the best holster for it because it weighs a metric ton.

I have another vertical rig from Uncle Mike I got specifically to hold my Beretta 96D with the suppressor attached.

In all I must say I like the vertical configuration best. The horizontal rigs end up pointing at the guy in line at the store behind you. While safe, I still like the vertical rigs better. They are great in the car. Best of all, they help keep my pants up in stead of trying to pull them down!

I always buy my ammo in bulk because I am a cheap bastard.

I now use my old safe for ammo storage. What I need to do is buy a pile of ammo cans and label them by caliber.

Then I will put a half a dozen shelves in there so I can take out a single ammo can without having to move a giant pile of ammo off the can that always seems to be on the bottom.

Fridge magnets could be used to indicate the ammo that I need to buy.

Is this Draught Ending?

Went ammo shopping and came up dry on ammo. The shelves were no longer empty. There were ARs and AKs to be had. Glocks were back as well as a full selection of other items.

I even discovered that Magpul PMags were back in three of my local gunshops.Two of them had a limit of two per customer but another had a metric ton of them and there was no limit.

The prices were not even jacked up. $15.95 each.

--But dammit! Where is all the .22LR?

Range Day

I went to Clark Brothers this weekend for a little range time.

It was a quiet day there. The range was nearly empty.

At Clark Brothers you can use the range for free but you have to buy your ammo there.

The reason it was so quiet was that the ammo shelves were so empty. They actually had a bit of .223 but we were limited to one box each.

So it was a short day at the range.

--Next time I go I will take a shotgun and do some skeet shooting.

Repeat This Often

I have kids. I love them more than anything in the universe.

• If I didn't love them I'd never let them see a real gun.
• If I didn't love them I'd demonize guns.
• If I didn't love them I'd keep them from being safety trained.
• If I didn't love them I'd make sure they never touched a REAL one.

But I do Love them. So I demystified guns.  I let them handle all kinds of guns. Showed them how to tell a real one from a toy. I taught them the differences in the various types. I taught them lots of rules. More than the classic 4 Rules.

• If you see a gun, STOP! Don’t touch it.
• Leave the area.
• Tell an adult.
• If you see a gun and don’t know whether it’s a real gun or just a toy, treat it like it’s a real gun.
• Tell me. Even if it's days later.

Adapted and expanded from the NRA’s Eddie Eagle materials. Children should be taught rules as soon as they are old enough to talk. Rules should be added as soon as the child understands and can repeat the earlier rules.

A Lot of Fuss

I cannot believe they are having such a fit about the 3D printers and the Liberator.

They forced Defcad to take it down and immediately The Pirate Bay and a hundred other sites had it up.

They will never be able to put this genie back in the bottle. I think the tantrums they are having are going a long way to encourage additional designs to come out.

Lots of classic zip gun designs are resurfacing. Lots of people are going to be making runs to Home Depot.

If you buy a 3D printer or a drill press are you going to end up on a list.

You think the government is going to realize that gun smithing in general is not that complicated?

Attended a Discussion on Guns

Last night I attended a discussion on "Gun Safety" at the church I attend.

This was a moderated discussion with about 12 people there. It was an interesting demographic spread. I learned a lot about the thought processes of some people.

Unrelated but interesting

 

It had a couple people that were of the "Guns are Evil" camp. They were operating on a pure emotional level. Facts were slim with them. I came to this meeting with a pile of data from the FBI and CDC and media sources. One believed that "Assault Weapons" were all full auto and murdered over 30,000 innocent people in the US every year. When I showed her that in 2011 only 323 people were murdered by rifles of all kinds she vapor locked. As topic after topic was presented with facts she actually said to me at one point, "Stop with your facts, it will not change how I feel.".

The moderator was great, described the concept of talking past each other. She was talking about feelings, I was talking about stats.

Two women that were there had been raped in the past. One of them became a gun owner and is now a concealed carry supporter. One was in the "Guns are Evil" emotional camp, a talisman that make otherwise normal people become evil.

It was mentioned that to avoid the 2nd Amendment issue the Fed "Should tax guns and ammo. make it cost $100 per bullet. I replied. "So you just want wealthy elitists to be only people armed?".

"Only police and military should have guns." was said. My reply was, "I just saw a movie where only the police and military had guns: Schindler's List".

I cleared up several myths like, "Silencers are Illegal" and "Assault Weapons are machine guns". 

The moderator brought it back to gun safety very well. We talked about how to keep kids safe. I was surprised how productive this conversation was. The consensus was that ignorance is not the solution. We keep our children safe by teaching them to swim and be safe around pools. We give them drivers education to make safe drivers. Early education would help them be able to tell a real gun from a toy. It would tell them what to do if they encountered an unsecured firearm.

We cleared up the that 2nd Amendment was not about hunting or written about muskets.

The willful ignorance was amazing. Head buried in the sand.

Hidden Compartment Furniture

It's the middle of the night and you hear irate pounding on your door, followed by a crash and footsteps coming up the stairs...

That is when you will want a bed side table like this.

I saw this one on a website called Secret Compartment Furniture.

As always, keep in mind that stashes like this are not safes. I still like the fact that a burglar in a hurry is way less likely to do a search well enough to find a stash like this.

Woman Calls 911

Washington has really bad 911 emergency. They are constantly in the news with screw ups that cost lives. Emergency services are constantly going to the wrong address. Ambulances often take too long, sometimes with lethal results. It's an old joke in DC. Finger-Point-O-Rama.

When will people understand that it is better to have a gun and not need one than to need a gun and not have one? 

"When seconds count, the cops are minutes away or...they put you hold. A Washington DC woman was recently the victim of a home invasion and when she called the police for help, the 911 operator made her wait. As a reminder, the average crime happens in one minute."

The liberal media is having a fit about discussing gun safes in your kids room. I believe a small gun safe in your kids closet is an excellent idea. In the bathrooms too. It's insurance. You hope you never need it but are damn glad you have it when you call 911 and get put on hold.

Need an AR-15 Day

The Axe

Looks like T-bolt and I will be heading to the range soon for some AR-15 fun.

I am looking forward to firing his rig. It is set up the way my next AR-15 will be.

His is built to be light and easy to carry. My first AR-15 has a bull barrel and is set up for distance shooting but it weighs a ton. My second AR-15 is an SBR currently in a pistol configuration until the paperwork is done.

My next AR-15 rig be set up to be light weight. Iron sights only.

Guns and Science Fiction

I am in the process of writing a Scfi novel. It takes place about 300 years in the future.

I plan on having a few main characters that are very well armed. I am trying to figure out the the features that my guns will have.

I may describe caseless ammo. Rounds that are solid and all propellent or projectile. No casings to eject.

I will also have them suppressed. Suppressors preserve the hearing when you need your hearing most. They also suppress flashes very will.

Sights on small arms would work like the HUDs in attack helicopters. Cross hairs in your vision.

They would be made from light polymer materials and simple. As few parts as possible.

Part 3: How to Register a Short Barrel Rifle (SBR)

Current Status of my SBR, "The Axe"

I heard back from the ATF.

They returned my forms and wanted the following corrections:

• Remove the term "AR-15" from the firearm description
• The two page Form 1 must be on a single page, front and back.

I had printed the PDF from the Internet one sided.  Luckily I was able to put the first page through my printer and print the second page on it's back. Signed, again. Right back out in the mail again.

Here is the series of events so far:

• Purchased the AR-15 to be converted to an SBR (10/1/12)
• Purchased the short barrel and upper
• DO NOT ASSEMBLE IT!
• Download and fill out the ATF Form 1 (print 2 sided)
• Go to CVS for two passport photos
• Go to the County Courthouse and get two fingerprint cards ($10)
• Certification of Compliance with 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B)
• Submit copies for the County Sheriff to sign
• Received signed forms in the mail (about 10 days) (11/1/12)
• Wrote a check for $200 
• Sent it all to the ATF (2 copies of Form 1, Compliance Cert, $200 check)
• Waited.
• Received the ATF forms back for corrections (5/1/13)
• Corrected the forms and sent them back in the mail (5/2/13)
• Wait...

It is worth noting that they cashed the check long ago. They also had a different address and suite to send the corrected forms and they had case numbers included.

The silly thing is, all this paperwork, is all to just add a shoulder stock!

Firearm Attribrution

As gun control advocates focus on universal firearm registration there is a few things you should do now.

I know several people that are selling their firearms and buying exactly the same firearm off book via legal private sales.

Example: I have a Glock 17 9mm. I have a pile of mags, holsters, ammo and other accessories. I am now looking for exactly the same gun to purchase in a private sale and then sell mine to someone else in a FFL sale.

Cash remains even and I am now off book.

Lather, rinse and repeat.

Now I can't/won't do that with any of my class III items. And I won't with modest items like shotguns. It's easy to just get more 10/22s and Mossberg 500s.

It's also a good idea to have a quantity of guns to turn in when it comes to that.

It could take some time, but if you don't have at least a basic quantity of guns
off books this will allow you to do it without it costing a ton of extra money,
only time.
