Yard Sailing

My wife bought this for me while she was out wandering about the yard sales over the weekend.

I can always use more ammo cans. This one is also my favorite size for easily storing ammo in quantity.

Ammo Ambassadors

Hi JB,

Brandon writing from AmmoToGo.com. I hope you're well and the trip back to New York was a good one. I can imagine knowing that you'll be crossing over that state line is one of those situations where it's not even worth looking up the laws for carrying... just leave it at home.

I know you mentioned you needed some range time and I thought this might interest you. Tuesday, we're launching a campaign with Magtech that we're hoping will put 100,000 rounds into the hands of new shooters for free. We're calling it "Ammo Ambassadors".

Basically, we want to make it as easy as possible for people already familiar with shooting and guns to bring somebody who has never shot before to the range and safely teach them about firearms. With an election just around the corner, the more people we can inspire to get familiar with what gun owners actually do with their firearms, the better.

So, here's how it'll work:
  • Find a new shooter who hasn't been to the range and experienced the joy of shooting before.
  • Download a target off our site and take them to the range.
  • Snap a photo of the new shooter with their target and upload it to our site.
  • You'll get a coupon code that's good for two boxes of free 9mm ammo from Magtech - along with free shipping.
We have 100,000 rounds of Magtech 9mm ready to ship right now. We're hoping to find 1,000 Ammo Ambassadors to take 1,000 new shooters out to the range in the next few weeks.

The details and the target are available here:
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index.php/cName/pistol-ammo-9mm#ammo-ambassadors (this page will go live on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Eastern Time)

If you think it's worthy, we'd love for you to take advantage of the program or share it with your readers if you think they'd be interested. In either case, thank you for taking the time to consider it.

-Brandon

Gun Show

I am heading out to the Nations Gun Show in a few minutes.

Today's mission is ammo.

I need subsonic .300 Blackout, .45 ACP and the ever elusive .22LR.

I will be heading to the range tomorrow and I will be testing out the new MAGPUL GL9 magazines in my Glock 17.

I will post what I think on Monday.

--Gotta go, there is coffee that needs drinking!

Loving the New Suppressor

I was shooting my new suppressor this week at the range and did a taste between my regular range ammo and the subsonic Remington HTP rounds.

The difference was amazing.

It was not crowed at ESS on Tuesday evening. The side by side tests were easy to tell the difference. Shooting the rounds back to back revealed the massive difference.

I decided that I need to do a video demo to demonstrate the value of these subsonic rounds.

--My new favorite rounds for Zombies.

The Run on .223

I happened into one of my usual stops for a couple mags for my Glock and noticed that the shelves were empty of ALL the .223 ammo. Not just the M855 steel core stuff.

Dammit.

It isn't that I don't already have a few thousand rounds at home. I do. Sheesh. I have over a thousand rounds already in mags.

It's just that I buy 100 rounds every time I shoot 100 rounds. So, like the run on .22LR, a couple things will happen:
  • Prices for .223 will go way up, dammit.
  • Availability will be thin
  • I will shoot it far less
  • My inventory will shrink
It's a stupid rule anyway. Backdoor gun control. We can't seem to take them away so let's make them less effective. Unless you are a despot. Then it's not so stupid. Can't have your armed citizens able to penetrate your mob control armor or your hunter killer robots!Oh and it's fine for your storm troopers I see...

--Citizen owned body armor will be next.

Ammo Age

One thing I really should have done in the past was date ammo that was going into a long term rotation.

A few years ago I started storing my .22LR in soda bottles. A 20 ounce soda bottle holds 500 rounds perfectly. It keeps the ammo handy and very dry. I like using the wide mouth Snapple bottles.

I even ran a test, keeping some in my aquarium for two months and it was still dry.

I have been shooting my old .22 recently. I picked the bottle based on the most tarnished ammo.

--From now on I will put a date on the bottle. If I ever find any to buy again...

AMMO REVIEW: Remington HTP, Jacketed Hollow Point Subsonic

I just found a new favorite 9mm ammo. Remington 9mm HTP Subsonic.

This jacketed hollow point 9mm ammo gives you the stopping power you need, with reliability.

These rounds contain the heavier 147 Grain projectile, even though it's a hollow point. This gives you the subsonic speeds without worries that light powder loads won't cycle your action. All this make it perfect for using with suppressors.

This Remington High Terminal Performance (HTP) ammo is high quality ammo. It has well crafted and very consistent components: primers, brass cases and a hollow point projectile. They will do the job with excellent controlled expansion and weight. They give me a great self defense ammo.

I ran a 500 round test with this ammo. I ran them through several firearms and was surprised more than once.

Glocks love this ammo. I tried the ammo in two different Glocks. Both ran great. My Glock 17 will eat any kind of ammo though. The Glock 17 is my daily carry firearm because it never jams and is high capacity. The HTP ammo is now my daily carry ammo. 20 rounds of 147 Grain, jacketed hollow point is a good tool. That says a lot with me.

I tried it next in my Smith and Wesson 539. I was very interested in this test because this gun is very particular about the ammo it likes. Especially hollow point ammo. It ran 100 rounds with no jams, great accuracy and function of the gun. The slide is tight on this gun. It hates light loads. Subsonic ammo had been trouble in the past.

That brings me to the other end of the bell curve. My Hi-Point 9mm is my least favorite, least reliable gun. It has the worst trigger I have ever felt. I can't actually believe I allow this turd to stay in my safe. There is no ammo made that won't jam in this gun. It's typical jam rate is about 1 in 6 shots will result in a jam. I have had a jam rate of 100% on some ammo. I ran 100 rounds through it.  Only 4 rounds jammed! Out of 100! Maybe it was because the gun had not been shot in such a long time I cleaned it right before taking it to the range. This made it the most impressive part of the test. I expected it to run fine in my Glock. It will shoot any crappy steel case cheep ammo. This says more. Wow.

Just for fun I ran three mags of this ammo through a friends full auto UZI. He warned me going in that the UZI had trouble with hollow point ammo on his feed ramp.

Open bolt UZIs are just odd to me. But damn, it's fun running a mag dump test. I did have two jams. As expected they stuck on the feed ramp. They cleared easy and the bullet nose was really damaged on the rounds that jammed. I saved the round and was going to take a photo for this post but I couldn't find it last night. I was amazed how well I stayed on target at full auto! Big fun!

The cost of the ammo is about $19 a box. This is an excellent price for the performance and quality you get. I got this ammo from Target Sports USA. They have FREE SHIPPING on ammo if you buy ammo by the case. I love that! My UPS guy does not love that! They have a really good selection of camping, shooting and other stuff for your gift giving!

Nations Gun Show

This weekend is the Nations Gun Show again. I need to buy Ammo big time. Mostly .223 and .45acp. But I will be keeping my eyes open for other cals as well.

--I will probably go on Friday right after work.

Ammo types

I need to do a picture like this of all the rounds I have in the collection.

I don't really have any completely odd ball cals. Is .25ACP odd?

I only keep a few cals in quantity.
  • .22LR
  • 12 gauge
  • .223
  • .308
  • 9mm
  • .45ACP
I do admit that I have a lot of .40 as well but that is not inventoried or minimal levels maintained.

--Yeah I need that pic.

When you need to be sure...

When did hollow points become obsolete?

This is the G2 Research R.I.P Ammo.

A bit too pricy though at about $2 per round...

Range Day

My boy and I are headed to the range today. We are going to try to get some pics, vid and look for some .22LR.

We are going to Clark Brothers in Warrenton VA. One of the things I really like about their shop is the consignment rack. I have gotten lucky there on multiple occasions.

--And the weather is beautiful.

Ammo is back

The brown truck of happiness dropped off a heavy plan box yesterday.

1000 rounds of 9mm. Price was OK. Worked ot to about $22.50 per 50 round box.

At my favorite gun shop yesterday they had 9mm, but ony 20 round boxes for $28 each.

--Sigh

How to Bypass the Inventory Controls for Ammo on Walm@rts Website

Here is an easy way to bypass the Inventory Control Blocks at Walm@rt. This will allow you to see if they have a specific item in stock and search all the store in the area.

--It really works but you need to use Internet Explorer to do it.

Ammo Storage

Check out a great ammo can story
I always buy my ammo in bulk because I am a cheap bastard.

I now use my old safe for ammo storage. What I need to do is buy a pile of ammo cans and label them by caliber.

Then I will put a half a dozen shelves in there so I can take out a single ammo can without having to move a giant pile of ammo off the can that always seems to be on the bottom.

Fridge magnets could be used to indicate the ammo that I need to buy.

--I need to take a hand truck to the next gun show...

Another Must Have

Are you tired of those pesky drones buzzing around your cabin? This product is for you!

--Thanks to Lucky Gunner! Joe Biden Approved!!

You Know You're a Gun Guy If...

I saw this pic and it cracked me up mostly because it was so true for me.

That pic represents a, not so small, fortune.

I never feel like I have enough ammo.

Anyway...

How would you finish the sentence?

"You Know You're a Gun Guy If _______________."

--"you read more than one gun blog."

Ammo Review

Anthony over at LuckyGunner.com sent over a couple boxes of ammo for me to test and review.

The first box is PMC Bronze .357 Magnum, 158 grain JSP.

The second box is PMC Gold Starfire .357 Magnum, 150 grain SFHP.

I used my Ruger SP101.

Both boxes shot flawlessly.

The photo of the target below was taken after the first 12 shots at 20 yards. All 70 shots ended up inside the 8 ring.

I was pleased with the results at 20 yards!
My friend NancyR gave it a try and found the recoil very manageable. If she had been shooting Zombies every shot would have been right in the sinuses.

I really like the PMC Ammo. The price is modest (when you can find it!) It has good quality and reliability. The Hollow Points make good defensive rounds.

--I recommend the PMC Ammo. Good stuff.

Nations Gun Show

Nations Gun Show! Let me know if you're going!
The Nations Gun Show is this weekend.

I was not going to go this time because my cash is a bit low.

I was thinking that it might be interesting to see prices and  availability.

I need to get a pile of .223. I could always use another case of .45 ACP. Only if the price is not crazy!

--Maybe I'll take my son. He can carry really heavy stuff!

Ammo

A friend emailed me the pic below. It is a nice comparative study or ammo!
