You Can't Blame the Gun

Sometimes people decide to do premeditated mass murder and/or suicide. Once that is decided, they decide on the tools they will use. Some mass murderers do a better job than others.

Some buy five gallons of gas and a book of matches.

Some make bombs they strap to their chests and get on a bus.

Some fly planes into buildings.

Some kidnap children and cut their throats or strangle them.

Some take a hunting rifle and climb a tower or lie in their trunk.

Some drive SUVs into crowded bus stops.

Some poison over the counter foods or drugs.

Some use Glocks on unarmed crowds.

Some push people off platforms in front of trains or off bridges.

Some rib stab random people in crowded subways.

Some park full school busses on train tracks.

You cannot blame the tool. Cannot blame the airplane, the SUV, the gasoline, the train, the bus, the gun, the rope, the knife or the rat poison. The responsibility lies with the murderer alone.

 

Once the insanity has driven them to decide to mass murder, they will, they always have, they will continue, they will find a way.

Get Off My Lawn!

I saw this on GIZMOTO. This cane is actually a Million-Volt Stun Baton.

Kel-Tec P3-AT Options

The gun I am most likely to have on me at any time is My Kel-Tec .380 that I have named Snappy. I call her Snappy because of the recoil felt when you shoot her.

She might have had a different name it I had gotten these options earlier.

The first option I got was the belt clip. It's a must have on the P3-AT. For pocket carry it works really nice.

The second option that really improves the shooting is the small grip extension. For my hands this small extension allows a third finger to engage with the grip. This single aspect changes the feel dramatically of the recoil when firing the modest .380. At the same time it does not add so much to the profile that it is a problem for pocket carry.

The next option was my extra mag.

When I decided I should have a second mag, in case I needed to reload, I went with an extended grip mag that brings the capacity up from six to ten rounds. It is still really small in the pocket and when used allows all your fingers to grip the gun.


The last option I have been thinking about getting is the  Crimson Trace Laser.

WANT: New Taurus .38 Special

I have been looking for a new conceal carry revolver and the new Taurus 85PLYB2 fits the bill.

Talking to my Gunsmith

The Biter

My favorite local gunsmith specializes in 1911's. This is the guy that did the excellent custom hammer work for me on The Biter.

It was a slow day in the shop so we were hanging out talking, drinking coffee, petting the cutest pit bull in the known universe.

I was looking for some thin grips and maybe a new trigger. Conversation came around to how he came to specialize in 1911s. His answer surprised me, "1911s are the perfect storm. They are expensive and need a lot of gun smithing to sort out their bugs." He continued, "The design is a hundred years old, we learned a lot in that hundred years. The mag design alone is awful. Even Jeff Cooper would bitch about their capacity and reliability now. What the F&%k, it's been a hundred years."

That was the point when coffee blasted out my nose. But he didn't stop.

Referring to my compact 1911, "People still love em though. This little guy you have will jam at least once every hundred rounds, I'd bet money." He's right. "It weighs a ton. This mechanical design should have a longer slide run. They just made it shorter. No design optimization. They left that to the smiths."

He said, "I Love 1911's,and people that get nostalgic guns that make me a ton of cash.  Average 1911 owner will spend about $2000 on a 1911 between initial cost and smithing. Even then they will still be picky about ammo. Me? I'll carry a gun that can be shot 10,000 times without cleaning, with no modifications."
 
I peeked. He carries an HK 45.

--I still like my 1911. But I only have about $410 into it total so far.

WANT: Ruger LC9

Ruger announces their new “LC9” compact polymer 9mm pistol. Six inches long, 0.90″ wide, and 4.5″ tall, the LC9 weighs 17.1 (w/unloaded magazine) and has a capacity of 7+1.

MSRP is $443.

This gun fits the feature set that I have been looking for in small frame auto for concealed carry. 9mm is a good round for this tool. Just a tad better than a .380.

Ruger quality construction leaves me very hopeful. I would be willing to bet that one of these will find its way into the gun safe. Maybe not today. They will fly off the shelves for a while, even though there has been issues, like the LCP did initially. I will wait a bit. But I think it's a buy.

--Damn my WANT list is getting long. I guess I will have to split it up into Primary, Secondary and Tertiary like my friend T-Bolt!

WANT: Ruger Scout Rifle

This bolt action .308 has the feature set I want. Available with 5 or 10 round magazines. It's not going to be at the top of the Want List because of the $995 price tag. I have to see one in person.

--Beware the man with one gun, for he probably knows how to use it. This might be that gun...

My Favorite Knife

Every gunnie I know also has a pile of knives somewhere. I'm no different.

My favorite fixed blade knife is a Ka-Bar 2, model 1212 Black Fighting Knife. This thing holds a mean edge. It can do anything from clean and skin a deer to dig a latrine. That's good because I am more likely to do those things than to actually get in a knife fight.

My friend T-Bolt influences me all the time, dammit. He got me to buy my 1911, my Remington model 11, as well as established my desire fore a Ka-Bar (my wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift). He also has me wanting a Ka-Bar Machete.




--I also kinda want this Ka-Bar Bayonet. I blame JayG for that desire...

Stocking Up for the Killer Robot Uprising

If you are in the Killer Robot Uprising or the Pending Zombie Apocalyse camps, you should be stockpiling ammo! I recently ordered 1000 rounds of .308 for a really great price from the Sportsmans Guide.

Another Reason I Love Virginia

Late Antlerless-Only Firearms Deer Season January 3, 2011-March 26, 2011

"In the counties (including the cities and towns within) of Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William, except on Department-owned lands. During this season only antlerless deer may be taken."

Deer season in VA now goes from September to March. I am glad because I have only managed to get into the woods twice this year. My freezer is currently bereft of venison.

--A day in the woods, seeing no deer, is still better than a good day in the office...

EOTech 512

Last fall I finally put together an AR-15. I named her Alice.

One of the best parts of Alice is her EOTech 512 Tactical Holographic Sight. Target acquisition with a holographic site is so easy. Law enforcement and the military use them everywhere. Perfect for any Killer Robot Uprising or Zombie Apocalypse! If you have to have a battery operated sight, one that takes regular AA batteries is great.

Alice also has a nice 3x flip in magnifier. It still uses the EOTech for sighting in but increases the range nicely.

I would have preferred a Trijicon - ACOG but I cannot afford one yet. I will have one one day.

Zombies Have Invaded the Range

You can find them at almost every range now. I have seen them on TV and on the Internet.

No not actual shambling Zombies. The next best thing! Zombie Targets!

I actually like the targets. A lot! They put a little light hearted fun into head shots. Kids love em! Look at the first target above as an example. You could practice "hostage" shooting. Very practical. Head shots are way more fun. Zombie Brides! Zombie Osama bin Laden!

I have seen how the survivalist community has also adopted the Zombie Apocalypse as a theme for practical preparedness. It makes it easier to talk about. Easier to write books like The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. There are also a ton of forums. Fun Stuff.
