Life is NOT Fair

My Daughter is off to her first semester at college. She needs to know a few things.


I recently received this old email forward that is still floating around the Internet. I don't care who wrote it. It's the message it contains.:

  • Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. 
  • Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Custom Zombie Lowers

I am seeing more and more Zombie themed gun accessories for AR15s and other guns

The bright green furniture is the most silly.

The EOTech Zombie sight is great.

The lowers with safety indicators completely crack me up.

If I were to get one, it would be like this.

On Being Thanksful

This morning I woke up and made coffee and put a pile of Orange Cinnamon Rolls in the oven.

In the quiet I consider all that I am thankful for.

The list is long. It has more than beer and pie and bacon on it.

Take some time today and be thankful.

Prep Tip of the Week

Three Days:

Here is your first goal in preparations, three days. You can be bothered to prep for three days of trouble, right?

Keep three days worth of gear, food and water in your car, and your Bug Out Bag (BOB), and at work, and where ever you spend a lot of time.

It's easy. Use some space in the back of one desk drawer. Put a stocked book bag in your locker. Stash a milk crate of items in the trunk of your car. And/Or put together a  fully stocked backpack BOB.

Don't forget the importance of what is in your pockets ALL the time. You better have at least a multi-tool knife of some kind!

--Rule #2: Be Prepared

Here is yet another example of how dumb assault weapons bans really are.

This is a picture of an AR15 that is "California compliant".

Are you kidding me?

No flash hider, no pistol grip, folding stock, no bayonet, and a 10 round magazine. Now it is completely safe and legal for civilian use.

--A total farce.

Holster Problem

I have carried a compact 1911 in a Crossbreed Deluxe holster for years, I love it.

When I decided I was going to carry my Px4, the Crossbreed Deluxe was a natural choice when I discovered they made one for the Px4.

I have been using it now for about a month now and unfortunately it has a problem. A bad problem.

The holster presses the mag release button all the time. I never had the mag drop out but if I had needed it that is some very bad mojo.

The photo to the right shows clearly the wear point where the mag release was getting pressure.

I plan on contacting Crossbreed to see if they can do anything. Otherwise I think I will cut a circle out at that spot.

Prep of the Week

Book of the Week
I am going to start a new weekly feature called Prep of the Week. I hope it will be common sense things everyone can do to help their families and a bit more security. I'm not going to talk just about stockpiling guns and ammo. I will talk about real practical preparations. I will recommend a book. Talk about survival oriented firearms. Lots of other things.

I will even talk about current events:
  • Thousands of people are still without power from Hurricane Sandy.
  • The US is hurtling toward financial disaster.
  • Our increased indecision and perceived weakness invite attacks from extremists.
What to do?

First off you need to assess where you are right this moment. If the power went off right now, how ready would you be? Water, food, shelter and security?

The Rule of 10s - Will you be OK in:

    10 minutes - computers crash, clocks blinking
    10 hours - freezers begin to thaw
    10 days - store shelves are empty, water runs out
    10 weeks - riots, looting, population migrations
    10 months - organized criminal ransacking
    10 seasons - starvation and ammo worth more than gold
    10 years - new civilization begins to formalize

World War Z

I saw the preview finally for World War Z.

I really enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to the movie. I will do my best to forget the book while watching. The trailer looks like it will have some major gun love:

I was not going to go this time because my cash is a bit low.

I was thinking that it might be interesting to see prices and  availability.

I need to get a pile of .223. I could always use another case of .45 ACP. Only if the price is not crazy!

USFA Zip .22LR

A friend emailed me this pic asking if I had ever seen it before.

This is the USFA Zip .22 Long Rifle.

It has not actually been released yet. I think it will be a while before we see one in the wild.

MSRP will be under $250 and it takes the Ruger 10/22 mags.

It's designed to be a handgun, and SBR or even a picitinny belly mounted secondary system.

Their website launches on Dec 1st.

Side Effects

So we did not change the captain of the Titanic last night. Oh well.

The deficit and debt will grow. Faster. The economy will tank faster. More bread and circuses. Our foreign policies will invite more attacks maybe wars. Higher taxes, prices and stress. Supreme Court will be more about politics than the Constitution.

Gun control and revival of the Assault Weapons Ban will become a priority, because it's what they do instead of something. Prices on decent capacity magazines, firearms and ammo will sky rocket.

I might have to add a Prepper Tip weekly. I fear we'll need them.

--At least the Gun Bloggers might have stuff to talk about.

CBRPS Draco

There is more and more of these Bullpup conversions out there for various firearms.

This one is an AK-47 conversion kit from CBRPS, and they have kits for all kinds of guns. I like this one and the one for the Remington 597.

It is the Sci-Fi movie looks that I like. Just drop in the rifle and you are ready to rock.  The ones of these that I have fired I have actually liked the form factor but the triggers always  suck really bad. This one at least uses the original safety and charging handle.

They started making kits like the Roni that used a handgun. These are a bit better. Using the natural trigger.

--Finally they started making Sci-Fi guns natively like the PS90, Kriss and the Cx4! Fun Stuff!

Part 2: How to Register a Short Barrel Rifle (SBR)

Current Status of my SBR, "The Axe"
I Finally heard from the County Sheriff regarding the Short Barrel Rifle paperwork. He called me at home on a Saturday. It was interesting how helpful he was. You know how you can actually hear people smiling  on the phone?

I left out a form.

He gave me the perfect Google search term "922g compliance" that resulted in the ATF form as the first hit.

Certification of Compliance with 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B)

It is basically a form to certify that I am not an illegal alien. I quickly printed it, filled it out, swearing on a stack of mothers graves that I am a US Citizen.

I dropped it off at the County Sheriffs office to his attention.

Here is the series of events so far and what is up next:
  • Purchased the AR-15 to be converted to an SBR
  • Purchased the short barrel and upper
  • DO NOT ASSEMBLE IT!
  • Download and fill out these Forms
    • Include the SN of the Receiver
    • Manufacturer
    • Make and Model
    • Your personal info
  • Go to CVS for two passport photos
  • Go to the County Courthouse and get two fingerprint cards ($10)
  • Certification of Compliance with 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B)
  • Submit copies for the County Sheriff to sign
  • Wait...
Next:
  • Receive signed forms in the mail (about 10 days)
  • Make color file copies
  • Write a check for $200 
  • Send it all to the ATF   
  • Wait...

Vid fun

I have been looking at the various kinds of Ruger 10-22 mods that are for fun shooting. There are various configs like the one below, might be fun project to do. A Gatling gun!! Think of the various options!



I wish someone would invent a "Hopper Feed" for .22 ammo. Dump 500 rounds in the top and rock and roll!

Collection: Mini-14

This is one from my collection. It's a Ruger Mini-14 with an aftermarket Tapco stock, DOT scope and a Laser. All of these "upgrades" came from Cheaperthandirt.com.


The scope and the Laser pretty much suck, but the stock is great. This was in fact my first adjustable, six position stock. I Loved it so much I put adjustable on several of my rifles and even a couple shotguns.

--Mini-14s are a great, easy to maintain, fun shooting rifle.
