Leather Treatment

I need some advice.

I have my dads old holster that is all leather and western style.

It's drying out.

What is a good way to treat the leather to keep it from drying out? The internet has opinions that very as far as Mac vs PC or Glock vs 1911 or Beans vs No-Beans in chilli!!

Mink oil works great.

I got stuff I use on expensive leather shoes. Better than mink oil, but works the same sorta way. The shoe guy told me to avoid the mink oil or neets foot oil for my shoes, but you ain't doing shoes.

Wish I could help you out, JB.

Instead all I've got to give you is this award.

Blackrock Leather-n-Rich. I've not (yet) used it on a holster but I do use it on my leather jackets and boots. Softens and enriches (best word to describe) the leather without leaving it oily or greasy.

Obenaufs. I use it on holsters, belts, boots, my leather bike seat... love it. Was recommended to me by a buddy who was a forest service fireman, apparently they all like it.

I use Sno-Seal beeswax waterproofing. just lightly heat the leather with a blow drier after applying. works great for holsters.

All of the above are great suggestions, just glad to see you preserve it. I have a old .22 H&R with a Holster of my Pops and it always reminds me of him to clean and handle.

Stay away from Neatsfoot oil *compound*. It rots the stitching.

I used Hydrophane (and loved it) for years on my tack when I was riding. I wouldn't use a product that's just supposed to waterproof unless that's your goal. Leather needs to breathe, and you don't want to basically wrap it in shirink-wrap. Pure neatsfoot oil has a place to recondition dried out leather (I will darken it, however). For reenacting I use a compound of beeswax, neatsfool oil and lard. I can bring some different samples next weekend for you to try if I can find the hydrophane.

Second the Hydrophane recommendation.
I've use it on holsters, belts, baseball gloves ...
Well, you get the idea. Good stuff.
