Movie Review: RED

The Miller Rating: 8 of 10

I really enjoyed this movie. It was paced well, great casting, acting, action, and I loved the characters. Especially Helen Mirren.

She must have been a shooter before this movie. No flinching. Not even blinking. Even with guns that had actual recoil. Great stuff.

It was great when she let rip with a .50 cal, belt fed, full auto. Funny thing was that they were not wearing hearing protection and simply talked with raised voices, standing right next to it. HA!

Lots of excellent Gun Love in this movie. Lots of different types. Hollywood loves MP5s. Almost as much as Desert Eagles.

I have never fired an MP5, but I would like to!

I also always love it when they have the heroes Hidden Gun Cache.

--Great flick for Gunnies!

Become a Student of Your Enemy

Study your adversary closely.

If you encounter this Killer Robot during an uprising it will probably have it's armor on!
Make sure you carry a heavy rig. I'd go with a .308 minimum. If it's armor is 1/4 inch you will need the penetration.

--After all, It carries a belt-fed .308!!

Police Chief Eric Swenson has found his bullets...

POLICE CHIEF'S AMMO?

SEBEKA, Minn. (AP) - Police Chief Eric Swenson has found his bullets. The chief of the Sebeka, Minnesota department had reported that police equipment including ammunition had been stolen. But the missing cop gear wasn't too far away. Swenson found the equipment in his kids' backyard fort. The Daily Journal of Fergus Falls reports the missing stuff included loaded ammo clips, stun grenades, a police radio and a pair of night vision goggles.

--Stun Grenades?! Kids these days!

The Snubby from Hell

Last weekend I had the chance to shoot a Smith & Wesson 360PD Revolver (aka The Snubby from Hell). I had looked at this revolver many times at the Nations Gun Show. I am always looking for a good Concealed Carry gun. It has features like a decent caliber (.357 Mag), reliable action, small (Length: 6.375 in, Width: 1.312 in, Height: 4.25 in, Barrel Length: 1.875 in) and light (Weight Empty: 11.3 oz).

Yes, I said 11.3 ounces empty and a .357mag.

That is why JayG calls it the Snubby from Hell!

I like the double action and the smaller 5 round titanium cylinder. The alloy frame is what makes it so light. It won't make my pants fall down! I hate that!

--Great stuff. I'm putting it on the shopping list!

Northcoast Blogmeet 2010

One of the things I loved the most about the Blog Shoot was trying other peoples guns.

This picture is Breda shooting my DPMS AR-15. It is nearly recoil-less and Breda said, "I Love this thing, I could shoot it all day." Please note the Hello Kitty ear muffs.

It probably helped that she had just finished shooting Newbius's .308 that kicked like a mule.

Many thanks to Heath and Amanda for hosting!!

--I will so be there for the next one.

Northcoast Blogmeet 2010

I had the good fortune to attend the Northcoast Blogmeet.
  • The weather was beautiful.
  • The company was excellent.
  • The food plentiful and nummy.
  • The beer was cold.
  • Bacon Candy!!
And then there was the shooting. Many future blog posts will result!

I got to shoot many firearms. These shooters were happy to share.

As much fun as the shooting was, the best part was meeting the people. Heath and Amanda were excellent hosts. Thanks for letting us invade your home! (invade is an understatement) It was great hanging out with Breda, Mike, JayG, TBolt , Newbius and everyone!

The Real Threat

You hear lots of people running in circles screaming that the sky is falling. For some it's Global Warming, Peak Oil, Economic Collapse, Illegal Immigration, or nuclear war.

Some even warn of the Pending Zombie Apocalypse.

--The Real Threat: The Killer Robot Uprising

Top Shot on the History Channel

I caught the first episode of the new reality show called Top Shot.

Hosted by that Survivor Guy named Colby. Damn, his teeth are white!

What I really like about the show is the slow motion vids of the shooting. I cannot believe how much these rifles flex.

They generate a ton of drama with challenges, eliminations, and all the well worn Reality TV constructs.

--They need more females, dammit!

WANT: FMG9 Folding Machine Gun

FMG9 Folding Machine Gun
Corner Shot Launcher
Developer Magpul Industries (USA)
Caliber 9mm
Features Spring-loaded design transitions from box to gun with a single button-push, with a 31-round Glock 18 magazine loaded and ready to fire.
Progress Nonfiring semiautomatic prototype shown in March 2008. No word yet on when a firing model—much less a fully automatic one—might be available.

The concept of
a discreet, foldable submachine gun is at least two decades old. Legendary gun designer Eugene Stoner developed one in the 1980s, but Magpul Industries made news this past March with its own updated take on the lethal cult classic. The FMG9, short for Folding Machine Gun, looks like some sort of toolbox with a flashlight mounted on top.

One moment, that flashlight is in your eyes, and one moment later—one very pregnant, James-Bond-by-way-of-Cyberpunk moment—and you're being fired at by a 9mm submachine gun. It's a quicker transition than anything Stoner was able to pull off, and that could make the weapon an effective tool for lightning raids on terrorist hideouts where surprise could play a major part. The gun also has an integrated laser sight, and can be carried without the handle and flashlight, for a sleeker, more pocketable profile.

--I want one!!

Clint Eastwood Turns 80

When I think about guns and movies I think about Clint Eastwood. From Dirty Harry to Grand Torino, Clint has made the Gun a character.

"There are two kinds of people in this world. People with guns, and people who dig..."
-The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

"I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?"
-Dirty Harry

"Get off my lawn..." -Grand Torino

--Great movies, great guns, great lines...

Ruger LCP with a Crimson Trace LASER

Another items I really liked at the gun show was a Ruger LCP with a Crimson Trace LASER.

As you may have already read, I already love the Ruger LCP as a small conceal carry handgun.

Adding this LASER does not detract at all from the feel of this gun. It smoothly goes into your pocket and out of your pocket.

The sight picture was perfect on the one I handled. The red dot was right at the sight point.

--Want!

Went to the Gun Show!

I took my son to the Nations Gun Show this weekend. It was crowded and all asses and elbows. Parking was a nightmare.

I finally found a place where the drinks and snacks were more expensive that my favorite movie theater.

Ammo is back in a big way, all calibers. Even the water tight battle packs I love.

No a lot of new stuff. I did see a few of the MAC-11 carbines that TBolt was talking about. I like the feel of them. Might have to add one to my list.

AR-15s were everywhere and inexpensive. I will probably buy one this fall. I will probably start off with a basic DPMS flat top and trick it out a piece at a time after that.

--And oh. Lots of ladies too...

Spring is not good for my aim...

The range I typically frequent is called Clark Brothers. It's in Northern VA and is very popular. I have taken two classes there. What I like most about it is that the range is out doors. It's free to use, but you have to buy their ammo. The ammo is not to expensive and it's usually plentiful, 'cept lately, but that's another story.

Two weeks ago I went to the range to air out some targets with my new matched Px4 - Cx4 pistol/carbine combo.

I sucked.

It was my worst shooting day at the range ever. Not because the guns were not sighted in correctly. Not because of bad technique. Not because of crappy ammo or bad sushi for lunch...

I could not see.

The pollen count topped 5000 that day. My eyes were glazed with a slime of eye-buggers. They itched and burned like wasabi dust had been blown into them by an evil villain.

--Even with my blood running thick with allergy meds I would have been at the mercy of the killer cyborgs if they had come that day...

My Favorite Carry

I carry concealed every chance I get.

The method I use most often is the specialized fanny pack.

It's a great rig not for just the concealed handgun. I carry a first aid kit that gets used way too often. I also have a Gerber multi-tool, a compass, Bic lighter, chap stick and Blackberry!

For me it's the perfect camo. Some over weight, middle aged, Hawaiian shirt, baggy shorts wearing, Dad dork.
