Running Late

I am running late and the blog fodder jar is empty this morning.

Go read Failure to Fire in the mean time.

This comic is on my daily coffee list of things to do while drinking coffee,

Yes. I need more coffee....

--I wish I had time for bacon.

Deer Hunting

This fall I want to get back into the field and see if I can fill my freezer with some delicious venison.

Was chatting with JayG last night and he wants to see if we can get some rifle hunting action going.

The most important part of hunting is the scouting.

The time to scout is over the next few months.

--Going to see how much the chiggers and ticks like Jay for food...

Tactical Seat Covers

Smittybilt G.E.A.R. Seat Covers

I saw these seat covers and think they would be great in my truck.

I keep all kinds of useful stuff in there and it would be so nice to be able to find it when I need it.

--Covering the coffee stains would be good too...

TGIF

It has been a tough week, but worth it. Now it is Friday, on a long weekend!

Going to go Skeet Shooting this weekend.

Going to have friends over for Burgers, Beer, Bourbon, Cigars and firepits.

Going to finish writing my novel!

Going to see Godzilla anf X-Men.

--Please Note: My wife will be out of town, so showers will be optional...

Elite Shooting Sports

A new range will be opening near my house this fall!

Elite Shooting Sports

An annual membership is $350. A family membership is $400. They also have hourly rates.

Here is the floor plan!

It will have lots of great features:
  • Gun shop
  • Cafe
  • Gun rentals
  • Gunsmithing
  • Training
  • Archery
  • More
--Best part is that it is less than 10 minutes from my house.

NRA Life Member

I forgot to tell you that I became an NRA Life Member.

Yea, me.

I signed up while I was at the NRA Annual Meeting.

I am also a current annual member of the 2nd Amendment Foundation. I may have to upgrade that membership as well.

With jug heads like the Chipotle open carry statement ijits helping we need a little extra in the RIGHT places...

--Am I required to drink NRA wine now?

Colion Noir New Website

Colion Noir has a new website and ep 2 is out.

"Colion and Amy address some criticism the show's first episode received from the mainstream media and discuss shopping for a gun."

--I met him at the NRA convention this year. Good guy.

Still a Great Graphic

I have posted this before. I probably will again. Probably annually:

--You can learn so much from Youtube...

The Hole Book by Peter Newell (1908)

"While fooling with a gun, Tom Potts shoots a bullet that seems to be unstoppable. A literal hole on each page traces the bullet’s path as it wreaks havoc across various scenes until it meets its match in a particularly sturdy cake. A native of McDonough County, Illinois, Newell built a reputation in the 1880s and 1890s for his humorous drawings and poems, which appeared in Harper’s Weekly, Harper’s Bazaar, Scribner’s Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Judge, and other publications. He later wrote and illustrated several popular children’s books, such as Topsys and Turvys (1893), a collection of poems and images which could be viewed upside-down or right-side-up; The Hole Book (1908), featured here; and The Slant Book (1910), which took the shape of a rhomboid and told the story of a baby carriage careening down a hill."

--Ahhh. Children's books just are not the same...

Suppressors are Legal

I continue to be amazed about the emails I get from people that simply cannot believe that a "regular person" is allowed to have a suppressor.

Let me answer a few questions here:
  • They are legal. Sold in many gun store and even on the Internet.
  • They require you file a Form 4 with the ATF.
  • "Silencers" and "Suppressors" are the same thing.
  • They are not as magically quiet as the movies depict.
  • They protect your hearing.
  • They do not make you into a mad assassin.
  • They are expensive, more expensive thn they should be.
  • I believe they should be allowed to use when hunting.
  • They can be used when hunting in some areas. Check your local laws.
  • I do not believe they should be a NFA item. It's Silly.
  • The Fed tax stamp is $200 on top of the cost of the device.
--Sigh.

New Rifle

I added a new rifle to the collection!

It is a Remington 700 SPS in .308. It also has a suppressor and a Leupold VX6 2-12x scope.

More on each component in separate posts.

--The timer has begun to see how long the paper work will take.

Taurus First 24 Kits

At  the NRA Convention I saw an interesting setup called First 24 Kits.

"Taurus has introduced a pair of survival kits that feature the company's handguns. According to Taurus, the kits are "designed to assist you for the first 24 hours of a horrific catastrophe."

This kit sports a .357 and the other one has a Judge .410.

There is a few basic survival supplies like a compass, knife, batteries, cord, flashlight and a space blanket. All in a lockable case.

For the same cost you could put together a better Bug Out Bag with a gun. That is a great post idea!

--It's nice that the case locks but it has a "Steal me!" look to it.

The Basics

Youtube is a great resource for gun owners, especially for new shooters. There are lots of good videos that show you the basics:

--Good stuff.

Going Camping!

New camping season has begun!

We are camper camping this weekend in a state park in southern Virginia.

In VA we are allowed to carry firearms, concealed or openly, in state parks. Yet another reason to love VA.

This will also be the shakedown cruise for our new camper.

We made one tactical error. You see we bought this camper because it fits, barely, into my garage. We have those dumb-ass HOA rules that say you cannot park RVs in your own driveway.

Anyway the error was, we forgot the the driveway was scheduled to be resealed yesterday.

--Lets hope it's dry enough to get the camper out!

JR Carbine Update

It has been a while since my JR Carbine has made its way out of the safe to the range. It has had as odd function issue.

This issue has gotten worse the more rounds I put through it.

I got to speak to the JR Carbine team while I was at the NRA Convention. Joe, the lead armorer was very helpful and took a lot of time to discuss the issue. He agreed that the buffer spring was too tight.

The day after I got home from the convention a new spring arrived in the mail. No charge.

That is good customer service.

It seemed better, but it did jam once, with a different kind of failure.

I was not running it this time with the suppressor to ensure that is not a factor.

--It shot pretty good at 150 feet.

WANT: IC-PDW

At the NRA Convention I was looking for light weight AR15 configurations. The next rig I build is planned to be very light weight.

One of my favorites from the show was the LWRC: IC-PDW.

Here are some of the features I really liked:
  • Weighs 6.1 pounds
  • Unified upper, quadrails
  • Full ambidextrous control
  • Compact Stock
  • 20" length overall
  • Full Auto Fun Switch!
The unified upper was really nice on this rig.

--Adding it to my Christmas list...

Zombies!

There was a ton of Zombie themed stuff at the NRA Convention this year. Lots of neon green and yellow paint spatters (what's up with that?) weirdness.

--I like the picitinny hatchet attached to the side of this one.

iScope iPhone 4 Adapter

At the NRA Convention I got to try out the iScope iPhone 4 Adapter and I had to buy one.

This weekend I put it on one of my .22s with a 3x to 9x scope and it works really well.

It can take snap shots like the first here or videos like the second image. Please forgive the heavy breathing because I didn't realize how well it collected audio as well.

This thing can also Facetime the scopes view. That could actually be kind of creepy. A Steven King story waiting to happen!

I think the thing I will most likely it for will be my spotting scope then it doesn't have to suffer any recoil. If it is Facetimed to my iPad I can sit at the bench and just glance at my iPad for results!

Please note: The video below was compressed when emailed off my phone.

--Fun Stuff.

Roni Brass Catcher

At the NRA Convention I wandered by the RONI booth.

As previously stated, I am a big Roni fan. At the show display they were showing off various accessories for the Roni.

The one that would be really handy at time is the brass catcher.

There turns out to be several variations available.

The suppressed Roni is great for shooting at my sisters farm. It doesn't scare the horses. Picking up all the brass from the grass is a total pain in the ass.

This inexpensive accessory solves that!

--It reminds me of the bagger on my lawn mower.

Rock River Arms LAR-PDS Pistol

Rock River Arms LAR-PDS Pistol
At the NRA convent I got to handle a Rock River Arms LAR-PDS Pistol w/ LAR-PDS Injection Molded Ribbed Handguard.

I Like It!!

The model RLP2110 had a really nice feel. The charging handle was really easy to use.

The picitinny on the butt end gives you lots of creative options for slings.

This is what the Keltec PLR-16 wanted to be.

Retail is $1300, and street price a bit lower.

--Maybe add a K-Bar bayonet!!

Dragon Leatherworks, the Valkyrie

It was really good to see Dennis up and about at the NRA Convention. Not only that, he was wearing a sweet Sunday BBQ holster:  the Valkyrie

Quote from Dennis:

"It was a custom request by the prop master at NCIS, specifically for the two-part episode starring Scott Bakula in what may well become a spin-off called NCIS: New Orleans."

This photo does not do it justice. Really beautiful Gator hide, or was it Croc? Dennis told a great story about the materials, eBay, and Scott Bakula wearing it. Also about how his gunshow boot was used as background on the show! Fun stuff. Go check out his web site!

Great seeing you Dennis!

--I hope the spin off happens!
