Cabin Off the Grid

Every now and then I get the itch to have a cabin in the woods somewhere. Here is one that I saw this morning with process and parts list for building.

I would add a hidden sub-floor gun safe.

  1. They should add rainwater harvesting on it as well.

  3. Mine is 14 x 21 and sits on a hilltop on the family farm. It is a work in progress, but almost everything for it came out of construction dumpsters (we lucked into a pile of 14' 2x4's from a series of packing crates- that's what set our dimensions) or was donated. We have one 50W solar panel and an inverter for power, and the rainwater collection system is going in this summer. Lighting is 12VDC LEDs and kerosene lamps, heat and cooking are provided by a wood stove. Plans are being made for a stand-alone shower house and underground storage for supplies. Liquid fuels are stored outside in a metal container, firewood is racked up about ten feet out the front door (not against the building). Surplus steel lockers inside give us mouse-free storage, but we have to use some pretty strong insecticides to keep the bugs out.
Our alarm clock is a solar powered radio tuned to a local talk radio station with the panel facing south-east. When the sun comes up, the radio turns on and we know it's time to get up. A fun side effect is that we don't turn it off when we leave, so the local wildlife is used to hearing voices around the cabin. When we open the door in the morning, the deer and turkeys stand there and look at us.
