REM 11 Short

Rem 11 Short
I have a Remington Model 11 that I do not use very often. I am considering having it modified by my friendly neighborhood gunsmith.

This modification would give me an excellent home defense tool or a camping gun. It would have five shots of 00 buck, no pumping required, ass kicking, action.

The smith says that the mods would be about $100 and the ATF stamp is only $5 for this modification. The paperwork takes a while though.

  1. STOP!

Double check the NFA rules. I could be wrong, but it can only be a AOW ($5) if it never had a shoulder stock. Otherwise it is a SBS ($200).

You can still chop the stock but you need the $200 stamp. (I would keep the stock anyway.)

    quick google search found this:

  2. MSJ makes a VERY good point. That would be a SBS. Also, manufacturing an AOW is a $200 stamp. Transferring an AOW is $5.

  3. The Smith will know for sure. Either way.

  4. Still, for $300 that would be awesome.

  5. Mad Saint Jack and ZerCool are both correct.

Since it has had a shoulder stock on it, you will be manufacturing a short-barreled shotgun, which is a $200 stamp.

Even if you were manufacturing an AOW from a factory-fresh receiver that had never had a stock on it, you would have to pay a "making tax" of $200 to put it on a Form 4; if you then sold it, the person who bought it would pay a $5 AOW Transfer Tax.

  6. (Also, I strongly suggest retaining the stock, especially on a recoil-operated Remington. Those things need a firm platform against which they recoil. Not only would a hand-held one likely be a jammomatic, PGO shotguns are pretty much useless for anything but breaching doors anyway; they're just too easy to miss with under pressure.)

  7. JB, what gunsmith in the area do you use? I assume he's in NoVA. If not, ignore my question.

  8. Whooh there, Hoss! Rem. 11's aren't that common any more. Plus, firing Pistol Gripped-Only Shot Guns aren't called "Wrist Breakers" for nothing. But if you want to go down that road, Keep it Simple and Cheap. Sell off the Remington, buy a Mossy "Just in Case" in one of those "Survival Tubes", then go to the range and pull its trigger. No need to hack up a semi-collectable, nor feed the Federales any more money, and, IF you can shoot it, then the Mossy will fulfill your wishes.

I tried out one of those Pistol Grip Guns years ago, and trust me, as big as I am, I wouldn't use it for anything but Door Breaching. And since I'm not a Member of the Pima County SWAT Team, I don't see a need for a Door Breacher in my Future. Besides, Axes are Cheaper.

But it's a Free Country (in some places), and if that's what you want to do, go for it. But I think I would take the money from the sale of the Remington, and apply it to something on your Wish List instead.

  9. Good advice guys. I have a couple Mossberg pump shotguns. I love them. The Remington Model 11 I picked up on a whim for $200 and I never use it for anything.

The $200 stamp doesn't bother me either.

Now if it doesn't cycle correctly shooting from the hip that is another story.

    I will run some tests...

  11. How is the recoil on the Rem 11? IIRC R. Lee Ermey had a Browning A-5 on Lock & Load and it looked like it was kicking him pretty hard.

I've thought about finding a Rem 11 or A-5 to cut down. Somewhere I read that British SAS used short A-5s for jungle fighting (WW 2?). I really like the idea. Also i've heard the Rems recoil system does not need to be tuned like other gas guns.

But if I was going to spend the money I would spend it on a Saiga because you are not giving up ammo with the short barrel.

You could cut it to 18.5" and skip the paperwork. Take a few inches off the stock and add a recoil pad. It would still be badass.

What I really want is an AOW that will feed the Mexican mini shells. Why? Why not?

  12. Of course, if you Trim the butt stock down, and want to make up a copy of Clyde Barrow's Whippit, then you'll still have to give money to the Federales, but....

  13. Les- keep the bbl at 18.5" and OAL at 26.5" and you can fake it till you make it.

  14. MSJ. Good idea. Trim the barrel to 18.5 inches. Can always make it shorter later...

  15. Must be nice to have so many shotguns you can cut one up just for the hell of it.

  16. What is the modern equivalent? Semi auto, pistol gripped, Mossberg or Remington?

  18. To get back to your original question, I'd go with a thigh holster, but that's just me. *grin*
