Quotes of the Week

There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as "caring" and "sensitive" because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he's willing to try to do good with other people's money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such programs is telling us that he'll do good with his own money – if a gun is held to his head.

– P.J. O'Rourke

The usual road to slavery is that first they take away your guns, then they take away your property, then last of all they tell you to shut up and say you are enjoying it.

– James A. Donald

They have gun control in Cuba. They have universal health care in Cuba. So why do they want to come here?

– Paul Harvey

Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA – ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the State.

– Heinrich Himmler

This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!

– Adolph Hitler [1935] The Weapons Act of Nazi Germany.

After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn't do it. I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military.

– William S. Burroughs

Things People Don't Get:

I am so tired of having to explain certain things to people over and over again.

Gravity: Astronauts don’t float around because there is no gravity in orbit. There is lots of gravity. Enough to hold the moon in orbit around the Earth. Enough to hold the Earth in orbit around the Sun. Weightlessness is caused by FREEFALL.

Social Security: The Government is NOT investing the money they take for Social Security. They do not save it for you. They have already spent it. If every dime I paid into Social Security had gone into a modest 401k I would have $11million dollars now. Money I could have passed down to my kids.

Gun Control:  When laws are made in the USA restricting gun ownership people are NOT safer. Criminals are safer. Crime does NOT go down. Criminals love disarmed populations.

--There's more. But I can't handle the rage like JayG does.

Knight Muzzle Loader

This fall I am heading back to the field to hunt with my Knight Muzzle Loader. This allows me to hunt during the "Primitive Weapons" season a few weeks early.

Knight LK93 Stainless Inline 50 cal Muzzleloader
This guy is all stainless steel, has a nice in line hammer with double safeties. I added an Aimpoint Dot scope and now it is great out to 100 yards. Wish me luck! I need some meat!

--Fun stuff, even though it's not so primitive.

The Stoeger Double Defense

I was looking though the stuff I collected when I was at the NRA convention this year and I saw some pics and pamphlets for the The Stoeger Double Defense. It is a classic, side by side, double barrel configuration for 20 or 12 gauge. The 12 gauge can even take 3 inch mags.

I have wanted a classic Coach Gun, double barrel shotgun for a while. The over the fireplace kind of goodness. I want a beautiful walnut stock on it though. That way I can tell stories about how my grand pappy use to repel boarders when he was a postman on a train!

The Stoeger Double Defense

The rails on it are nice but I have to say that for a home defense gun I would prefer my shot Mossberg 500 with pistol grip.

--I saw one in my gun store for $365. Not low enough to tempt me.

Getting it so wrong.

This is why we have the 2nd Amendment. To ensure we do not have power consolidated with asshats like this.

--If these people presumed that everyone was armed they would be a lot more polite.

SHOOT ME NOW!

The world has completely changed since I was a kid. Back in the 1960's guns were everywhere in my world. They were in every house that I played in as a little kid. And it was the safest time and place of my life. We even had a rifle range in the basement of my elementary school! We had shooting in gym class!

Firearm use depictions when I was a kid didn't result in blood in the streets.

Go figure.

In fact one of my favorite exemplars of gun safety was called, "Shoot Me Now!".

--I miss the old school Loony Toons and Johnny Quest.

It is sobering to reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence.

Movie: Vantage Point

I saw the movie Vantage Point on DVD. It was an interesting method to revisit the classic Rashomon. The same set of events as seen from various vantage points.

The Miller Rating = 6 of 10

It was good enough to recommend but had several issues and missed opportunities.

The guns were good. Here is the list from the Internet Movie Firearms Database:

--This movie needed more of Sigourney Weaver!

I Love Yard Sales

One of the things I love about where I live in Virginia is the yard sales. Because there is so many people living here that have recently retired from the military, we get fun yard sales. I have found everything from body armor, backpacks, .308 battle packs of ammo, knives and cases.

Here are a couple pics from a recent find.

Standard issue military holster. It's still in excellent condition with little wear. Most of the medium frame handguns I have will fit securely in this holster and the belt clip will work most anywhere.
It is shown here holding my Smith & Wesson 539.  keep in mind that this is not a quick draw holster. to open it you must pull down and out on the D ring.

--It's a nice little addition to the holster drawer and for only $1.00!

922r Adventures

My 922r complaint Saiga 12 conversion.

When I bought my Saiga 12 gauge it was configured as an imported hunting shotgun. I wanted to use some 20 round mags in it but in order to be legal it needs to have a quantity of US made parts. Here are before and after pics:

My Saiga 12 configuration right out of the box.

After the conversion for compliance with 922r

Always comply with the law. The Vids below are some examples of the Youtube.com explanations regarding the 922r compliance regulations:

I am still going to do the trigger group for three more parts. That would put me way past what is required. I am OK with that.

--I still have to think of a good name for the Saiga 12. "Shit Storm" is the leading contender.

Fire Starting

Over the years I have become a student of several survival skills. One of these is building a fire without matches. I have managed to do this many ways using the following:
  • Flint and steel
  • Magnifying glass
  • A Flashlight
  • Steel wool and car battery
  • Bow and dowel
  • Car Headlight
  • Bic, Zippo, etc
This handy dandy Flint and Steel Knife is only $5.45 from Amazon. Perfect for tossing in the trunk of your car, Bug Out Bag or glove box.

--Know any other ways I should try to make fire? I have already tried the Coke can and Chocolate method to no avail.

Movie: Blade Runner

Blade Runner is one of my favorite Movies of all time. I saw this in the theater in 1982 and I have owned it on Beta, VHS, Laserdisk, DVD and BluRay.

The Miller Rating = 9 of 10

1 COP 357 Derringer

2 LAPD 2019 blaster

Both of these guns were props made specifically for the movie.

I would love to buy replicas of these babies, just for fun.

    Gun Shot "Blow Out Kit"

    Gun Shot Blow Out Kit
I have been working on my standard range bag contents. It just happened that I saw this video this week and have decided I need to have a gun shot "Blow Out Kit" in my range bag. This guy shot himself in the leg by accident and kept his head. He called 911 and had the bleeding stopped before the EMTs arrived.

To date, I have been carrying a first aid kit in my bag and a bigger one in my truck, but these are not emergency trauma kits specifically designed for gun shot wounds.

Amazon has a lot of Emergency Kits of various kinds, sizes and focus.

I am leaning toward a dedicated gun shot trauma blow out kit. Here are me requirements:
    • Can be accessed and utilized with one hand
    • Self contained in an easy open pouch
    • Fits in a thigh pocket
    • One handed Tourniquets
    • Quickclot bandages (trauma pads)
    • Clotting powder
    • Variety of gauze rolls and pads
    • Surgical shears
    • Scalpels, forceps, and other instruments
    • Surgical gloves
    • Medical tapes
There are several prefab kits available on the Internet. I think I may just buy a good Molle pouch put together a kit with the help of an EMT I know.

Shit happens. And fast. Be prepared. It may save you or someone near you.

--It's better to have one and not need one than to need one and not have one.

The Four Rule, The Two Disciplines, Plus...

I have been talking firearms safety with a lot of people lately. People have asked me to train their kids, wives, husbands and democrats. I think I will even be offering a safety course at my church. I will be covering the 4 Rules plus a lot more. I add my 2 Disciplines, Range Rules and Kid Rules.

    Listed here for your reference:

    Be a good shooting ambassador
    The Four Rules:
    • Treat every gun as if it is loaded.
    • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
    • Don't point your gun at something you don't want destroyed.
    • Know your target and what's behind and around it.
    The Two Disciplines:
    • Trigger Discipline. "Keep your booger hook off the bang switch!"
    • Muzzle Discipline. "Watch where you're pointing that thing!"
    The Range Rules:
    • Casing and uncasing firearms safely
    • Keeping breaches open
    • Muzzles always pointing down range
    • Target Placement
    • How to avoid shooting the walls, floor and ceiling
    • Casing ejection awarness
    • Range Specific Rules
    The Rules for Kids:
    • If you see a real gun, don't touch it
    • Leave the area immediatly
    • Call me, right away
--There are a lot more rules that I have not listed here. Like "Call your mother, she misses you.".

    Custom Case

I stumbled on a guys project as I wandered around the web.

I have considered this kind of modification to a guitar case. I even managed to buy a Fender guitar case at a yard sale for $5. My son grabbed it and actually uses it for his guitar.

In VA I don't recommend this kind of project unless you have a concealed carry permit.

Rifles, carbines, handguns and even shotguns could work in something like this. Excellent camo for my AR-10 and ten extra mags. And no hippies fumbling with their iPhones to call 911 as I order my black quad espresso at Starbucks.

--Even though I love making hippies cry, sometimes it worth the warm quiet secret inside...

Sons of Guns Season Starts Tonight

    Stephanie Hayden
I love the TV series Sons of Guns on the Discovery Channel.

All New Season Begins Tonight! Wednesday, July 13 at 9 PM

"Sons of Guns showcases one of America's most skilled and creative gun works, Red Jacket Firearms, and its founder, Will Hayden. While pursuing its bread-and-butter work with customizing and improving AK-47's, the Baton Rouge-based team delves into the world of historic and classic weapons."

I really enjoy the interaction with all the people on the show. I love the gear. All the guys at Red Jacket seem to have the same taste in firearms as I do.

One day I would like to buy some Red Jacket guns.

--And it's got Stephanie Hayden!!  Oh yeah!

    M1 Garand for Sale

    I have a classic M1 Garand for sale: $1000

    Shotgun Ammo Tests

So I have been trying to decide what kind of 12 gauge ammo to purchase in quantity. In the past I have simply purchased what was on sale at the time. I never did a performance comparison before, for 12 gauge ammo, that was all 00 Buckshot and specifically for self defense.

    Mossberg 500
I ran this test with my Mossberg 500.

I picked the Mossberg for the test because it is the most reliable, stable, known quantity shotgun of all the ones I have in the collection. I wanted this test to be about the ammo not the shotgun.

All of the ammo below came from Lucky Gunner. Historically I have purchased Remington 2 3/4" standard 00 Buckshot. It's what was usually on the shelves and I never really thought twice about it. But I never bought it in quantity either. A box of 5 got me through hunting season with 3 shells to spare usually.

    Here is what I compared:

In general every round performed flawlessly. I was going to post pictures of my targets but they were so similar in pattern (and so torn up) that I didn't bother. All were shot at 10 yards. The only notable difference was that the Remington 3" shells contained more buckshot, a noticeable amount more.

    Remington - Standard - 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot

I started the test with these because they are what I have shot the most in the past. I was able to establish a baseline with these. Weather the target is paper, a deer or a knife wielding burglar,  these will get the job done!

Winchester Ranger - 2 3/4" Low Recoil Law Enforcement Ammunition

I had never tried low recoil 12 gauge rounds before. I was very happy. I personally don't mind recoil. I kinda like it actually. These rounds made me wish I had brought along a 20 gauge shotgun to compare kicks. It was noticeably lighter even though the pellet count and pattern were the same as the standard Remington 2 3/4" rounds. These would great if you were planning a long day of training. They would also be great in my other Mossberg 500 shotgun with a short barrel and pistol grip.

These are great for pump shotguns. I am not sure these would cycle my Saiga 12 gauge though.

Sellier and Bellot - 2 3/4" SB Buck Shot

These rounds performed just like the Remington standard buckshot. Recoil felt the same and the pattern on the target was the same. The most notable difference was the price. $1.00 a round vs $.60 a round.

    Remington - Magnum - 3" 00 Buckshot

These shells kicked the hardest, as expected. I don't mind the recoil. My wife would NOT like bruises they would leave on her. At 10 yards the pattern on the target was about the same diameter but there was a lot more holes. This shotgun had a smooth bore and no choke. I understand that the pattern can be tightened up on these rounds with a full choke, extending the range. Great for hunting but not really an issue as defensive rounds at 10 yards.

I should also note that I could fit one less of the 3" shells in the Mossberg.

    My conclusions:

I am surprised to discover that the Remington 2 3/4" shells I have bought the most in the past came in last in this side by side comparison. All functioned really well and I'd be happy to have any of them when the pending Zombie Apocalypse hits. Here is the specifics:
    • For performance I like the Remington 3" Magnums the best. More lead per trigger pull. I swear the target looked like a whole mag from my Glock 9mm shot in one trigger pull. I am a big guy so the extra recoil doesn't bother me. I will use these when I deer hunt from now on.
    • The Seller & Bellot 2 3/4" performed well AND has a great price point. I love value when I am looking to buy 1000 rounds. But not at the expense of performance. These performed.
    • The Winchester Ranger Low Recoil rounds were great. At a price just under the Remington Standard 00. These would be sweet for special duty and you can be sure I will be ordering some.
    • Note: I now have to try the Sellier & Bellot 3" Magnum shell.
I think my next tests will be a variety of low recoil 2 3/4" shells. Several manufacturers produce them now.

Maybe I will do a test to see what my Saiga 12 like to eat best!

I may do another side by side of several 3" 00 Buckshot brands.

    Too much fun!

BTW, If you are, like me, looking for Buckshot in quantity LuckyGunner.com has multiple options at good prices. A quick peek tonight shows six different brands as low as $115 per 250 round boxes.

--All and all good fun and I learned a lot. I think the UPS guy is gonna hate me now!
